I'm very new to Carol Danvers. I came to Marvel by way of the Ultimate books, and I mostly know Danvers as Ultimate Nick Fury's replacement in S.H.I.E.L.D. I know Bob loves Captain Marvel and it's one of his favorite titles. I recall him describing one story line in which Carol sacrifices her memory to save the world. I don't recall if this was a Miss Marvel or Captain Marvel story. Can anyone help me? I'd like to read it.

I honestly didn't realize how much I missed Carol Danvers until I read this new #1 (I caught up in realtime with a few issues left in volume 1). I reread the first page a couple of times because I felt like I was missing something, so when I turned to the black title page, I felt more comfortable. From there, I just had so much fun reading the issue & hanging out with Carol again. I liked the art and those final inner thoughts rocketed their way up among my top 10 favorite Carol thoughts. I must've read them 4-5 times. I completely agree that Carol's motivation for her upcoming story felt really natural & made a lot of sense. Also, Kit's Captain Marvel origin story at the back was a great way to incorporate it into the issue. Agreed. Reading it felt like catching up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. I read other books that feature female characters but with Carol she has such a specific voice that a lot of the others just don't have. Batwoman used to be up there for me but it sadly doesn't feel that way anymore. The new Ms. Marvel seems like it will be similar in tone which I love. I love books that really get inside a character's head.

She's still dealing with that in the run that started this week.

Captain Marvel had my vote for "Best On-going Series" for 2013, and my two favorite single issues of the year were #14 and #17 from that series, so I am most definitely a fan! The trade paperback that contains that story-arc is out, but under the title Avengers: The Enemy Within. It contains the Enemy Within one-shot, Avengers Assemble #16 and #17, and Captain Marvel #13, #14, and #17, which concludes the series. CM #15 and #16 were the "Infinity" cross-overs, and although they give you some insight into Carol's condition, they aren't wholly necessary to this plot--but they are fabulous, nonetheless!

By the way, I like the art in this new issue better than any of the art in the previous volume. I hope they stick with this cleaner art style.

To Whom it May Concern, The new Captain Marvel #1 is a pretty special comic book! That is all. Bob I finally got to read issue #1 and I concur. I am pleased to say that my slight reservations about the change have been eliminated with the way in which the new story was set up and I am excited to see where KSD takes Captain Marvel (and us as we go along for the ride)

I'm getting the number one issue sent to me some time next week(along with the Batwoman Elegy TP) I ordered it for free at an online store where i had saved up some points that i needed to spend, can't wait to read it. But first i need to read the last three or so issues from the previous volume.
Oh, and the Enemy Within cross-over is one of the best superhero story arcs i've read in a long time.

Great humour and heart, and as you say, the reasoning behind Carol's new "job" is well thought out! "Higher, Further, Faster, More."

"D", I re-read "Enemy Within" just before getting to the new first issue, and it definitely deepened the experience, truly making this re-launch the next chapter of that saga for those of us already on board, as well as a fine jumping-on point for those new to it. ENJOY!

Kelly Sue DeConnick has brought such special notes to her personality that Captain Marvel is truly singular! By the way (and I hope that I'm not mistaken), it was lovely chatting with you at the Chris Claremont interview at the NYCC!

I have to say I was disappointed by The Enemy Within, but not due to Kelly Sue's writing. It was due to Marvel's interference with the story. I don't know if Kelly Sue originally intended it to be a crossover with Avengers Assemble (I actually suspect that she didn't) but the Infinity issues, while good, were definitely not in her plans. In part three of her interview on Marvel.com she reveals the original plan to show Carol's recovery which I would have loved to read. For me, issues 13-17 were not really as strong as 1-12. It definitely felt that Kelly Sue was shoe-horning her story into Marvel's mandate.
While it appears that Marvel has set the direction for this new volume, I really wish they would let Kelly Sue tell the story in her incredible style without all the interference. But as they seem to be setting Carol up as a major Marvel signature character, I fear that they will be too heavy-handed in their editorial control of this volume as well.

Kara, I agree about the "Infinity" tie-ins being good but intrusive, which is undoubtedly the reason that they aren't included in "The Enemy Within" trade collection. Perhaps some day Ms. DeConnick will get Marvel to put out those "missing" Captain Marvel issues! I do think, if memory serves, that the idea behind the Avengers Assemble/Captain Marvel cross-over was to bring some of those "Avengers eyes" over to Carol, as the sales needed a boost to keep it going, a strategy which sadly didn't work well enough. At last year's NYCC, editor Sreve Wacker was effusive in his belief that "five years from now, we'll look back and see that we were witness to the birth of one of Marvel's most important characters", and just today Axel Alonzo was quoted on CBR about how vital a character he feels that Captain Marvel is: "I remember attending Toronto Comicon shortly after the release of "Captain Marvel" and seeing a five-year-old girl who'd come in a handmade Captain Marvel outfit with her hair moussed up – and I totally got the need for this book, for this hero. Someone who looks like her, and acts like her. So, in a way, "Captain Marvel" helped pave the road to the expanded role of female leads. "Ms. Marvel," "Black Widow," "Elektra," "She-Hulk," the all-female "X-Men" book -- female heroes anchoring their own series have never been as prevalent in the Marvel Universe, and there's more to come. There's a thirst out there for strong female characters, and it's not just female readers who crave them. Marvel readers want a good story, that's all." I think that as long as Kelly Sue DeConnick is writing the series, there will be a balance between the larger goals of the company, and her need to tell the best Carol Danvers stories she can! If she leaves...

The Enemy Within was actually my favorite arc in the first series. It was super weird that it jumped straight to Infinity, but it worked out semi-okay for me. I read the Infinity issues first, along with the rest of Infinity, which was great. Then I went back and read the Enemy Within trade, which flowed pretty smoothly from 14 to 17. But, yeah, editorial is gonna edit, I guess?
