Heyo,
As the subject shows this is the place to discuss anything and everything to do with the Fantastic Four - I gotta admit I'm a bit surprised this wasn't created a bit sooner, but figured with the latest relaunch of the FF this was as good a time as any to start.
Fantastic Four (2014) #1 - I'm a longtime FF fan and I haven't been all that happy with the comic for a number of years and with them relaunching yet again....well lets just say I wasn't really holding out a lot of hope that I'd be doing anything more than buying the book just to keep my collection going. However, I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I finally got to sit down and read it. Although I didn't care much for the first few pages, when I saw the FF fighting Fin Fang Foom it really got a whole lot better. It definitely seemed like they were trying to channel the original FF #1 by having the team fight a giant monster. All the team members seemed to play the roles I was accustomed to them playing, Reed with his invention to save the day, but needing to explain it all first, Sue using her fields to assist, Johnny looking to light something up and dear sweet Ben trying to wallop the bad guy. So far so good.
The art was certainly acceptable and I thought the full page(minus an inset panel) just to the right of the staple of Ben clobbering Fin Fang Foom was, if you'll pardon the pun, fantastic. I just love the way it was laid out, has a really dynamic feel to it, like you are seeing the moment just a fraction of a second after the punch but not so far behind that it isn't immediately clear what happened. I mean when I look at the picture, it's not static to me, it's almost like I see the entire moment, if that makes sense?
Then after the fight, the team has gone it's separate ways and Reed and Sue have a very relatable husband/wife moment until the kids show up. Ben is off with Alicia and we get to see that humanity that resides in him that is so key to his entire character. I really liked that page. Johnny is off to see his agent, which frankly I've never liked what they did to his character a few years ago, but this scene is actually pretty decent. The writers did a good job throughout the book I think of noting past FF history. For instance Johnny's agent says "...fight Paste-Pot Pete and Asbestos Man..." and Johnny replies "Showing your age, man. Pete calls himself The Trapster now and the other guys's dead....". Alicia makes a comment about her and Ben breaking up and getting back together many times. The comic just had a nice sense of history to it and I liked that.
I am interested to see where it goes from here. It starts out kind of dark, and I'm hoping this dark aspect of the story doesn't last a half dozen issues, though I'm sure it will as everything seems build for the trades now. I would really like to see this become a classic 3 issue story arc.
All in all, considering how much I've disliked the FF in the past few years I would definitely give this first issue a solid B+.
