Ok...so I suppose I'll be the odd-man out on Gotham Academy. Could not get into it at all. I think it's the massive YA vibe, which is not a genre that calls to me. The mystery of Olive's relationships with both the other students and whatever she was like the previous year did not catch my interest. The ghost mystery felt half-hearted and unsuspenseful (and I know they will develop it later in the arc). The Bruce Wayne cameo at the end felt like it was trying too hard to impart the gravitas the rest of the issue failed to do. I was not enchanted with the pencils; it was competent but unremarkable. However, the coloring was amazing! The greenish, ghoulish lighting as Olive and Maps were waiting outside the office for the headmaster was masterfully done, and the sunsets were prosaic streaks of autumn rusts and golds. I know that this represents a new kind of story and approach and even audience, and I think that is fantastic. It just wasn't a story I could get into. I'm with you to a point. I really like all the art myself (pencils and colors), and mostly read it just for that. The story has me engaged enough that I don't feel like I've wasted my money but so far it hasn't been anything that has made me consider it a "must read". But then, I got #1 and #2 with the intention of maybe having a book my daughter and I could both read and talk about (she didn't really care for it; turns out Rocket Girl was a way better choice for a common book for She and I), so maybe I had never bought it with myself in mind in the first place. I'm still getting it to see where it goes the next few issues, but it might not wind up a permanent resident on my pull.

It was a slow week for my pull list Wednesday, so I picked the first 3 issues based on the end of year love. I currently don't read any DC books, but from the way everyone's been talking it's somewhat disconnected from the main line books, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
This was a really fun book, that really engaged me. The characters and story are developing nicely and for me it's nice that there isn't a lot of continuity minutia to bog down the story. It's just a nice fun story.

This was a really fun book, that really engaged me. The characters and story are developing nicely and for me it's nice that there isn't a lot of continuity minutia to bog down the story. It's just a nice fun story. It's connected enough to still give you the feeling that it is in the DCU, but disconnected enough to not have to worry about any other books ruining it. Wayne being the benefactore for the school is a great way to give you the feeling that batman is in the shadows protecting everyone, but that's where he stays, in the shadows. Its a beautiful book in every way. It takes alot to convince me, because anytime a "different" book like this comes out, people tend to over rate them very quickly, but this is a special book. I hope it sticks around for a very long time. As cool as maps is, my favorite character by far is Olive, she has that hidden spark inside that i cant wait to see come to the light. I hope that she grows into a character that plays a bigger role in the DCU.

I heard this is getting cancelled. Not enough people are buying it. I get the feeling they have a 12 issue story in mind, anyway. We'll still get the good stuff. There's nothing official about cancellation that I can see, FWIW.

I haven't heard anything about it being canceled. If so my Twitter would have blown up

How great is this series? The greatest? Yup. How great is Maps? Yup, the greatest.
#5 had great action, great intrigue, advanced the mystery and had some of the best Maps lines yet. And the art. Drop. Dead. Gorgeous.
I adore this book.

I am really surprised and pleased how much I am enjoying this book. This and gothom by midnight from DC I read monthly and I am enjoying both for completely different reasons. This book is like the dessert after a heavy meal that makes up most of my pull.

I agree with all the positives people keep mentioning. I have no complaints about this book, none at all. My favorite thing about it is Maps and Olives relationship, that is what really keeps me so ingauged. I also love the mystery with her mom/arkham and a certain inmate. But its definitley olive and maps dynamic that i love oh so much.
Poor Maps though, in a few years shes going to be every superheros girl friend.
