HIGH FIVE! I used to hate my birthday since it was so late in the year and I was younger than all of my friends growing up. Months mean so much to kids! As an athlete, it actually helped me, the Little League cutoff date used to be Aug.31st so I was one of the older kids on my team all the time. My poor daughter has a Feb. birthday and it seems to always get postponed due to snow or ice...we are southerners after all hahaha Haha I played like every sport under the sun when I was growing up, but I guess I never noticed that stuff because my parents did it all.

We'll now, do tell, haven't heard about the sporty Stephanie...not too many of us student/athlete/geeks out there lol, what did you play, what were you good at, & what did you enjoy the most? It's truly a list and a half, but starting with what I played: -Baseball (for 4-5 years) -Soccer (7+ years) -Hockey and ringette (14+ years... I was looking to play provincial level and eventually I wanted to be on Team Canada but that never panned out) -Volleyball (3-4 years) -Basketball (I played for several years and coached basketball for a bit as well) -Rowing (I was on my high school team) I also dabbled in wind surfing, skiing, snowboarding, I love swimming and also just got my scuba certification, although that's not really a sport. Hockey and ringette were the best things that I played. Ringette is pretty similar to hockey but in the small town I grew up in, girls weren't allowed to play hockey, so I played ringette with a team of girls. I wasn't great at first, but I started when I was probably 6-7 years old and I trained and took workshops and went to camps to get better and better until I was one of the captains of my team and the starting center. When I was a teenager, I went back and forth between hockey and ringette throughout those years and played for my high school team as well. After school was finished, I continued playing both hockey and ringette in different years and I would happily pick it up again in a heartbeat if I could find a good team to join. Here's a pic of me playing ringette when I was probably 16-17ish, I believe:

Ha, well I'm very glad you're enjoying our shenanigans! Ringette is very much like hockey. Except instead of a hockey stick with a blade on the end, you play with just a stick. Instead of a puck, you have a ring. It's more or less the same principle as hockey though... on ice, you try to score goals. Two forwards, one center, two defense and a goalie. You pass over the blue lines though. There's more info here but as a kid, this was my only real option to play hockey. Also: that crazy cat lady toy is AMAZING and I must own it.

I'm not TOO familiar with Niagara Falls area as a whole, but on the way back from there, there's a city called Hamilton that has a great comic book shop called Big B Comics. In Toronto itself, there's: -Silver Snail: www.silversnail.com/-The Beguiling: www.beguilingbooksandart.com/ (they also own Little Island Comics, which is a comic shop with just kids comics in it) -Snakes and Lattes: www.snakesandlattes.com/ (a board game cafe that has over 2500 games, serves coffee, snacks and alcohol... well worth checking out) -BMV: 471 Bloor St. West - This is a chain but this store is the best. The whole top floor (there are three floors) is comics. Plus the rest of the book store is brilliant and everything is cheap, cheap, cheap. I'll try to think of more and let you know, but I hope this is a good start.

Hi Stephanie! Thanks so much for plugging Locke & Key so much. I might never have picked it up if not for your suggestion (well, fangirling). It has become not just my favorite comics of all time, but one of the best stories I've ever read. You rock! Do you have any other suggestions?

My love for that comic was completely unexpected too and I just checked it out on a whim. So happy that I did! What other stuff do you like typically? I can list off stuff, but I can probably give you some better recommendations if you let me know what you're into. I'll quickly say this: if you liked Locke & Key and you like the creepiness of it and all, Joe Hill's other work is great. The Cape is like a crazier version of the movie Chronicle. And Horns, one of his novels, is AMAZING. And along the horror/thriller side of things, this is another novel, but The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes is brilliant. She's the author of Fairest Vol. 2: The Hidden Kingdom.

I got Joe Hill's Horns and Heart Shaped Box for Christmas and I still haven't started either of them because I'm still in the middle of his dad's Dark Tower Series. I can only read one novel at a time, but I read a ton of comics. I read most of the Bat-books and I'm beginning to read a lot more Marvel. Hawkeye is another book I never would have given a chance if not for Talking Comics and has become one of my favorites. After getting into Sex Criminals I kind of want to read everything Matt Fraction does now. The list of comics I read is pretty exhausting, I just like anything that's good. Thank you for your suggestions. The Cape and The Shining Girls sounds interesting, I'll add them to the list.

I obviously also love the crap out of Rachel Rising and Revival, so those are a couple more recommendations if you're interested

I'm curious as to how you got the opportunity to be involved in the comic industry as a profession? I get asked this a little bit when I go to conventions and such and people always think I went through an application process and such, but oddly enough, I wound up getting my job through Twitter. I had just moved back from the East Coast and was looking for something to do as a career and not just something temporary. I had been writing and taking photos while I lived in the middle of nowhere, so I was posting a lot about that. I was a big fan of Bill Willingham and followed him on Twitter and one day I got into a big conversation online with him about this and that. At that time I had my photography page as my link in my profile and Bill checked it out. After that, he sent me a message and asked me what I charged for photography and this and that since he needed someone to come to Seattle to take a bunch of reference photos for a book he was working on at the time. I agreed to come along and it so happened to be at the same time as the Emerald City Comicon. Since I loved conventions, comics and all that, I asked Bill if I could help out at the show since I would be in Seattle anyways and it wouldn't take me too long to take all of the pictures. He agreed and got me a pass into the show. I made a schedule of his appearances, signings and panels and started by getting him to those, answering questions that fans had and making sure that everything more or less ran smoothly. I later found out that Adam Hughes had been telling Bill that he needed an assistant and the best way to find a good fit is to pick someone and throw them into a convention - essentially sink or swim. At the end of the weekend and after taking the photos and such, Bill told me that he had been looking for an assistant to come to conventions, keep his schedule, do research and take photos when needed. Since I could do all of that, Bill asked if I wanted to do the job full-time and we've been working together ever since. Long story short: it was really just me being in the right place at the right time and having a little bit of luck on my side.
