Christian,
Without having to have either you or your daughter read Infinity, a short version of what's going that you could give to your daughter would be that at the end of that battle, Black Bolt of the Inhumans, while his floating city of Attilan was being destroyed, decide to explode a bomb that spread the "Inhuman-creating" mutagenic Terrigen Mist across the world, and those that have a to-date hidden Inhuman gene end up cocooned while their powers develop.
(I thought that would be shorter somehow.)

I thought it was weird that they decided to do this. I figure it's probably something to do with her wanting to be like Cap, but I really feel like if they are trying to empower women of color that they would have taken a different route with her super powers. I'm sure they'll address that... but right now I'm really worried about it.

Just take a look at previews for issue 2 and onward or in the All-New Marvel Now.Point One section with her in it where she already has her powers. Her hair is brown. I explained how that her appearance in the classic Ms. Marvel outfit with blonde hair was more likely an effect of the cocoon reacting to her hallucination, but I think more likely than not, it was a splash page created as a joke by the creators pointing out that, despite her wanting to look like Carol, she would look silly in that outfit.

But, if her powers include shape-shifting, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the story is something along the lines of "pretending to be what she's not" and even if she's dreamed of being blonde, white, and fitting in, events will happen that will help her realize she doesn't need to change who she is to be awesome.

Thanks for the explanation, Bob - I wasn't super familiar with that story either so this gives me a much better idea of what was going on when she got her powers!

Ya know, if that was in fact the case, I could think of worse storylines to go with. Her realizing how to be true to herself and not try to be someone she's not is always a good coming-of-age story

Yeah, that was the whole deal in the issue...she wanted to be "normal" like her "friend". And since she is an Avenger fan-girl (and her favorite is Carol) it makes sense that the first time using her powers is to shift into what her subconscious truly wants. I bet in issue 2 we will get the "love yourself" lesson.

Great second issue! I am absolutely loving this comic so far. One of the best on the shelves right now for sure.

Really liked issue #2. Not rushing things, just showing us a new character dealing with what's happened to her and more of her family life. Digging the art a lot, the faces are especially expressive.
This book could become a real gem!

Just read #2 after my daughter finished it. It was awesome! The parable from the Quran encapsulates everything I wanted this book to be for my daughter: "Whoever kills one person, it is as if he has killed all of mankind and whoever saves one person, it is as if he has saved all of mankind." The whole battle Kamala is experiencing with the image of what she wants to look like to fit in as opposed to the reality of the lack of superhero underwear and thigh high crime-fighting boots. With my 11 year old daughter reading this, I can see that she will grow up viewing topics like Islam in America in a completely different viewpoint than people from my generation. By the way, that is a good thing.

#2 was BETTER, it expanded on the concept, explained her power set, and she grew as a character in a natural way. really amazing art, too
