Just curious, what is it about Hickman's Avengers that you dislike? I know this is going to sound like a total cop out but besides the art, pretty much everything. I didn't like the plot, the characterization, the dialogue, the obtuse nature of storytelling where nothing and everything are happening at the same time and the fact that trade reading is pretty much the only way to read this book and have it make sense. I don't say this without any research though. I didn't just read one issue of Avengers/New Avengers and go meh. I've read Avengers and New Avengers through Infinity (in trade) but it just doesn't do anything for me. In fairness, I did actually enjoy one issue: the casino issue. That was kind of fun. If you love Hickman's Avengers books that's totally fine. I'm not sitting up here on a high horse saying "You read THAT? Feh!" It obviously has its fans and I DO love Hickman's indie work like Manhattan Projects and East of West, but his Marvel stuff just isn't for me. What he said. ^^^ On my to read linked in my signature I've got the Hickman run of the Fantastic Four as one of the things I want to read again. Mainly because so many people really seem to like Hickman's work, including his FF and Avengers stuff, and it just doesn't jive with me. I remember absolutely hating the reboot he gave the FF, to a point where I actually stopped the title for a good while(and that is significant because I've been collecting FF since I was around 12!)(of course I bought all the issues from the back issue pile but I just couldn't stomach picking them up at full price). I dunno. I'm hoping when I get around to re-reading them that something jumps out at me and the second time through isn't so bad. To be honest I'm kind of in the same place with the New Avengers(aka Illuminati) right now, but I already mentioned that earlier in the thread. - Beau

Yeah, I can see that. Just curious. I think part of what you dislike is a big part of what I like about it, which is interesting. Everybody's taste in comics is different. It's part of what makes this such an interesting and diverse medium.

So I just read Avengers World #3 and I think it has officially jumped the shark. There just isn't much I can really say about how much this book has disappointed me...

Heyo,
With a couple of mini-series coming to an end soon(Marvel Knights Hulk and Night of the Living Dead Pool) I figured I'd have some free space on the pull list and though one slot is reserved for the new Iron Fist book when it arrives I decided to fill the other one with Mighty Avengers. I picked up issues 1-4 today so I don't think I need too many more to be caught up as the series isn't all that far along. I definitely look forward to it, even though I've heard it's more like a Heroes for Hire series than an Avenger series.....then again New Avengers is more like Illuminati than Avengers so I suppose it all works out.

Issues 1-4 are fine for setting the stage, but in my opinion the series doesn't get good until issue #5. 1-4 are too caught up in the Infinity event.

Avengers and New Avengers are two of my favorite books on the stands right now, with Avengers winning out a little bit more (I guess I'm one of the only people for whom that's true!). It's got action, huge plots, great character moments, and so much more. I can understand people not liking it, because it isn't exactly a traditional Avengers book, but I just love it. I will admit that the issues that I liked the least are the ones where Nick Spencer was doing the writing, when it got too vague and high-minded. Weirdly enough, I think Spencer's hitting it out of the park with Avengers World, although you can see the minor hints of the excessive vagueness. I also think that the past few issues of theAvengers have been a bit so-so--I think it's an issue with the art and pacing. But again, I still love it; Infinity was one of my favorite stories of 2013.

I'm really liking this series. IMO is it much, much better than New Avengers, which has been treading basically the same ground for the past 6(or more) months it seems. This Avengers title has a couple of people I know, and also introduced me to a few I didn't know, though so far I'm not really liking the new Power Man. His character seems pretty one dimensional so I'm hoping for some personal growth from him in the coming issues. Really liking Spectrum though. I don't know her but I really like the way Luke seems to give her equal footing on the team. So far so good! - Beau

IMO if you were to rank the current Avengers titles, that haven't been announced as canceled already I would rank them as: 1. New Avengers 2. Uncanny Avengers 3. Avengers Undercover 4. Mighty Avengers 5. Avengers 6. Secret Avengers 7. Avengers World

It is strange writer is doing both new avengers and avengers and they are so different in rank, but I totally agree with the rank
I would put secret avengers a little higher but that is just me

I'm really getting the feeling I should be reading new avengers, maybe I'll look around for some back issues. I'm still burned by the last run of secret avengers, I think I came into the new run biased and couldn't get into it. I do like avengers world so far.

Well that does it for New Avengers. I read #15 a couple of days ago and want to think on it before making any rash decisions, but I'm done. To me this was just another convoluted issue that went nowhere. Nothing in the story was moved forward except for some back story on Black Swan. Honestly this is one of the longest, most boring, go nowhere titles I think I've ever read. Then to top it off it appears to be going to a New Avengers #16.NOW #1 which "is the beginning of 'A PERFECT WORLD' as the Illuminati, searching for a solution to the Incursions from parallel universes, find an Earth that has managed to survive all it's Incursions! But to save our planet, must they doom that one?"
Seriously? Are they still agonizing over the destroying of worlds? Kill it and move on or let 'our' world die. Either way stop the train cause I officially don't care anymore and want off.

I'm starting to feel the same way about New Avengers. I like the concept, but as it drags on with absolutely no plot development, I'm losing interest. The only reason I've kept reading it this long is that Hickman earned a ton of trust from my by the way he executed his Fantastic Four run, and I'm hoping that all of this will be paid off at the end of his huge story. But this level of wheel-spinning is ridiculous.

Chris, I'll second your feelings on New Avengers; I do trust Jonathan Hickman to deliver, but despite some fine characterizations on the Black Swan, Namor, T'challa, and Reed, there is little forward momentum building in the story. I know that Mr. Hickman isn't "writing for the trade" but trying to craft something epic, but there's a sameness to too many of the events issue-to-issue. I'll hang in, but I'm not enjoying myself as much as I was at the start of Mr. Hickman's runs on the two series. Of late, my two favorite "A" titles have been Mighty Avengers and the sadly-concluded Avengers Assemble.

Heyo,
So glad I dropped New Avengers in favor of Mighty Avengers. Having a lot of fun reading it and they've had some fun plot lines and issues so far. This week was #9 and there was a reveal as to who was currently in the Ronin costume. Not going to give it away but it was great and I really hope to see much more of this character in the future.
