"Melissa Benoist will star in the Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler drama based on the DC Comics character."
Really excited for this show! And for the casting.
My one and only question is, how will Superman be involved? Obviously this show can stand on its own with Kara/Supergirl as the main character, but they haven't been secretive about the fact that Supermans prescence will be in the show. I'm wondering if they'll cast somebody as Superman or Clark but just not focus on him except for the odd appearance, or if they'll pull a 'Birds of Prey' and have Superman disappear or die maybe onscreen or off. They are also including many Superman side characters like Jimmy and Cat Grant (which are rumoured to be a bit different from their comic counterparts).
I think it could be good if they ignore Superman altogether and this be a universe where only Supergirl exists and Superman doesn't. Just like Flash and Arrow don't have Batman and Superman in it. That way the different depictions of Jimmy and Cat would make sense as its just its own story in its own show and us comic readers and treat it as Earth 2 or 3 or 52 etc.
Also in a world (IN A WORLD!) where only Supergirl exists and we get her weekly, that would place much more attention on her as a standalone character without the need for the male lead. Sure Superman is in the movies. And I mean, he's Superman. But Supergirl is on your screen 20 or so hours and weeks a year. She is the one you become familiar with. And a name like Supergirl is on par with Wonder Woman. Imagine the audience it would grab.
But if they do cast a Superman, I'm really curious how they will treat that. Because like Gotham, many people will watch it just hoping for that hopeful appearance of he who shall not be named. But having a Superman on TV who is not Henry Cavill would be cool. He could always be that "an in the news today Superman did blah blah" while Kara has her own problems. Plus, it just gives even more weight to the highly unlikely but 'man-wouldn't-it-be-awesome-if' Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover with every DC title. It would be difficult to handle right, but nobody has ever done anything like that before. And if DC want to get out from the Marvel shadow everybody has placed them under, that would be a hell of a way to do it.
