Talking Games Episode #30: Building an Affordable PC
Podcast Stream Subscribe on iTunes Feedburner Link
This week Justin, Rob, Bobby and special guest Eric sit down to chat about that mythical machine, the PC. It’s no secret that we don’t get to talk about PC gaming much on the show, but that’s because none of us really have one. It’s so expensive to build them! Who on earth could afford that??? Wait, you’re saying it’s not? Eric shows us the ways to build a PC without dropping our entire savings account. The crew also talks about their history with PC gaming and we get to know a little about Eric and his history with games. It’s a special episode so make sure you tune in!

Thanks for this podcast. As someone that was born and raised on PC gaming, the lack of PC gaming discussion has been a bit of a let down for me. Don't take that as much of a criticism though because I don't really want you guys to force discussion just to satisfy an audience. Hopefully, when you guys get a chance to upgrade, you'll be able to hit up those highly rated PC-only games... this one in particular has my attention: Elite: Dangerous - Space Sim. Pretty incredible looking. Here's a vid showing a smuggling run with comments on how it's done. The ambient sound effects are amazing, and I love how hyperspace is depicted as well as the glass frosting up when he shuts down his engines and shields. I could lose myself in this game. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbaLJTGHkj8

I watched the video you linked, looks awesome. I suck at those types of games but I appreciate the attention to detail there for sure. Thanks for giving us the honest feedback and support

I was happy to see a PC driven podcast this past week, though I do tend to go back and forth between console and PC depending on releases. But overall I still find myself on my PC 9/10 times. The fact that sooooo many games are readily available on Steam is what does it for me. It's almost overwhelming how many games are available and it's so easy to buy/install/jump right in and play. Plus every game has it's own forum/community that's just a click away.
Hopefully we can do some steam gaming in the future!

The fact that sooooo many games are readily available on Steam is what does it for me. It's almost overwhelming how many games are available and it's so easy to buy/install/jump right in and play. Plus every game has it's own forum/community that's just a click away. Hopefully we can do some steam gaming in the future! Steam is great. Wish PSN and Xbox Live would take more cues from them in terms of user interface and options.... not to mention the sales are incredible. And to top it all off, it's a free service. The shear number of indie titles that come out to the PC is staggering. A lot of them will work their way to the consoles, especially now that the PS4 is sporting a PC-like architecture, but if you want to play most indies first, you'll probably play them on Steam, especially with their greenlight service. Still doesn't stop the fact that a lot of them are garbage, and I'm not one to do any Early Access (though I can see the appeal for some gamers), but you get some incredible ones like FTL, Divinity: Original Sin, Broken Age, Wasteland 2 and other crowdsource funded games. Also, another great thing about PC gaming: the modding community... and it's even better when you have developers out there like Bethesda, Obsidian, and Runic Games who create games with the full intention of providing the modding tools. Just awesome. Takes games to a whole another level. I really debated about upgrading my 360 and getting a PS4 and/or Xbox One. Most games I'm interested will also come out on PC (Evolve, Arkham Knight) so it was a tough decision for me.... most games... but NOT Destiny (damn you, Bungie!) and NOT the Master Chief Collection (damn you, Microsoft!). I just broke down.. got both consoles. Now I can play everything... well, except Nintendo games, but there's rarely a game on a Nintendo system I HAVE to play immediately. I'll wait a while and get that system in a couple years.

That's a good system for the money. The only comments I would make to that is that 256GB SSD will fill up pretty quick, especially with the size of games these days (Wolfenstein, I'm looking at you!). The SSD will run ultra fast though, so I'd probably just complement that drive with a larger HDD. Put your OS on the SSD (and maybe some key games you'll play a lot) with the HDD for everything else. You can also purchase hybrids that will give you the best of both worlds.
