Hi all!
I'm launching a new feature on Talking Comics that will begin tomorrow where I spotlight local comic shops that are making efforts to attract new readers, be welcoming to women and diverse readers, and engage with the broader communities in which they're located. If you know of an awesome local comic shop you’d like me to spotlight, post in this thread with the shop’s name, website or social media account, and a brief description of why you think the shop deserves to be featured on the site. If I decide to profile the shop I may get in touch with you for more quotes.

I'd like to spotlight my go-to comics and coffee place the Silver Snail/Black Canary Espresso Bar! The Silver Snail is a staple in the Toronto comics and geek community and when they moved to their new location, they added the Black Canary Espresso Bar and made a great store even better. Every Wednesday I spend my morning and afternoon at the cafe, reading comics and writing reviews for their site. I get to sit down with cool people like Sunny and Andrea from the GeekPron, Sam Maggs from the Mary Sue, and somebody named Steph Cooke ;p. (As much as Steph hates the communal long table, I love it because I got to meet all these amazing folks). I've been there often enough that I'm friends with a lot of the employees there and they all have different areas of geek that they specialize in. They're all super friendly and very welcoming. The coffee is excellent, the company is even better, and of course, the comics are always divine. (eh maybe not always but you know what I mean.) You can find them on twitter and facebook.

Thank you for the suggestion! Stephanie recommended them as well, and I am reaching out for a future feature. It sounds like an amazing shop!

I would recommend Stairway to Heaven Comics in Exeter, New Hampshire. I was there on business and stumbled into their shop ... literally, it's at the bottom of a flight of stairs ... and had a great conversation with the owner (about how sorting thousands of comics is good for one's character). The shop itself was welcoming, filled with light, and, of course, comics.

I'd like to highlight two stores in my area. First, is Acme Comics in Greensboro, NC (www.acmecomics.com). First, the shop has a mini-store attached to the main store that focuses on comic books and related media for children. Second, they often collaborate with places like the Greensboro Children's Museum to host signings and kid-friendly events. They seem to be pretty welcoming to female readers, at least in my anecdotal experience as there are always women in the shop when I'm there.
The second store I want to highlight is Chapel Hill comics in, you guessed it, Chapel Hill, NC. Their website is www.chapehillcomics.com. The store recently had a Halloween event for kids where they had a costume contest for kids, gave free books, and had food too! They do a good job highlighting local creators, promote harder to find books like Copra, and have a dedicated kids section with a good selection and friendly atmosphere.
