The last film I watched was Escape From Tomorrow, which I'd give 8/10. Reminded me a lot of David Lynch film.

The last film I watched was Escape From Tomorrow, which I'd give 8/10. Reminded me a lot of David Lynch film. I keep meaning to watch that film it looks interesting, and it's pretty cool how it's shot.  This film is somewhere between a 2/10 and a perfect 10, I'm not sure. |

I like this thread, it gives me a chance to talk about Looper!
The movie came out a couple of years ago, but i only saw it a few weeks ago.I loved the story and the acting(Joseph Gordon Levitt played a pretty convincing young Bruce Willis)and i would love it if there would someday be a sequel or a TV show.

In between Game of Thrones box sets I watched the 'classic' Sci-Fi film Eyeborgs at the weekend.
It involved people being chased by CCTV cameras on legs.
If that doesn't sound awesome enough for you it had Danny Trejo in it.
My sister bought it for me as a joke present but it was enjoyable enough and had the occasional funny one-liner.
A semi-solid 4/10

Went to see The Judge last night.
Awesome debut from Robert Downey JR's production company. RDJ is a force of nature in this film. All the feels, charming, great actors, great performances.
I highly recommend it to all.

Superman: The Return
Since everybody apparently decided this was the just the worst thing ever and Brandon Routh is on Arrow, from Iowa and totes dreamy I decided to watch it again. Ok, so the movie isn't great but it should be put into perspective by the fact that, willingly or not, this move is marginally a sequel to Superman IV: The Quest for Peace or as I think of it Superman IV: fuck fuck fuck. The story doesn't really make much sense as Lex Luthor has found the fortress of solitude and had a heart-to-heart with Jor El (presumably operating futuristic crystal-based alien technology is only slightly more complicated than the new Android). Lex Spacey then decides to make an island out of Kryptonite that will eat all the land in the whole world. No really that's his plan. On top of this Amy Adams is amazingly contains more personality as Lois than Kate did, No Amy that wasn't a compliment. But here's the really weird thing, I kind of like it. I mean don't get me wrong the movie is more full of plot holes than fox news is conspiracy theorists and short skirts, but it's sort of charming in a strange way. Brandon Routh is arguably as good a Clark Kent as Christopher Reeves was, That IS a compliment. And Mr. Routh proves to be a believable Superman as well. The big question here was how did Kevin Spacey do as Lex Luthor? I think, given the ludicrous plot and bad direction (Why are we happy this guy gets to do the X-Men again?) I think he did a good job. Spacey had a bunch of fun with it, seemed at ease in Lex's skin, and was, if nothing else, entertaining. Overall the movie isn't good, hell its barely mediocre, but what it did do is carry some of the spirit of the character. Being the age I am, Christopher Reeve will always be the bar I measure any Man of Tomorrow movie and by that Brandon Routh got a hell of a lot closer than Henry Cavil (though I didn't dislike Cavil). And if I am to make the inevitable comparison between Return and Steel, I'll take return any day of the week and twice on Sunday. So I give this flick a 2 out of 3.2 (because why are ratings scale always out of five or ten).
PS Why isn't James Marsden in more stuff?

Just saw Whiplash, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. I'm not even a fan of jazz music, to say the least, but the movie was really engaging and featured two frankly amazing performances by Teller and Simmons. I know the Fantastic Four movie sounds more dire all the time but I may have to go watch it just for Miles Teller now. The way the scenes were structured and edited brought a tension to the film and the final scene had my whole audience applauding at the end. I'm a little conflicted by how I feel about the ultimate message of the film, and I am once again disappointed that a movie with such meaty roles had nothing but a throwaway female character. Sigh. For that I'm giving it a 7/10 but honestly it's well worth seeing just for Teller and Simmons, especially if you only know Simmons as the guy from the Farmers insurance commercials because holy. crap. he was terrifying.

Got 22 Jump Street and saw it over the weekend for the first time since I loved 21 Jump Street......this movie was even better than the first one! So hilarious and I love how they made fun about the fact that is a sequel and re-using the plot without being all over your face unlike other movies. Hilarious indeed (I was laughing the whole time) and love the ambiguity about a sequel (since those also were part of the jokes, especially in that awesome credit sequence!).

 10/10 This documentary is amazing. It's so depressing that the villain in this, SOCO International, is a British company. They're part of the new colonists, taking (trying to anyway) the Congo's natural resources for themselves like greedy, money-hungry Europeans have been doing for centuries now. It's terrible also that, from what I've seen, when Western media (such as the BBC) talks about this topic, they tend to paint it so that people believe that the government and authorities in the Congo are primarily to blame, when that isn't really true. Yes, the Congolese authorities are heavily corrupt, but only because of the situation of their country, which is only the way it is because of Western actions. The media needs to focus just as much, if not more, on holding European/Western governments and corporations accountable, and holding the UN accountable, rather than the struggling governments of the poorest countries on Earth. The mainstream media talks about the 'vile poachers' and corrupt local officials, when in reality, the poaching much of the time happens as a result of the poverty and conflict in that region, and the corrupt local officials are part of institutions that have remained weak as a result of colonialism. The media doesn't talk about the vile neo-colonialist corporations seeking to mercilessly plunder Congo of its natural resources, the uncaring international institutions like the UN who don't act when companies like SOCO International do things which are completely illegal under international law, and the media doesn't cover conflicts like these. The media covers conflicts where developed countries are scared about their oil, and paint these conflicts so that people buy into this idea that these conflicts in the Middle East are the 'new World War 2' and the 'biggest conflict of our time'. Did you know that the biggest war there has been since World War 2 was in the Congo, from the mid-90s to the mid-2000s? Probably not. And the media doesn't talk about the gruesome murders committed in the War on Drugs, initiated by developed countries, either, where corpses are hanged from highway bridges, people are disembowelled, and beheaded, and tortured- in poorer countries like Mexico and Honduras. Well anyway... rant over. A comics website is probably not a good place at all to go on a political rant, probably pissing in the wind there (or however that expression goes). EDIT: when I ranted about the media, I mean mainstream media. Vice News, as well as freelance journalists do an excellent job of covering things which the mainstream media doesn't, and in ways which the mainstream media doesn't. |
