I feel bad, I am so behind on this podcast so I'm not sure how much, if at all, discussion has been had about this game. But I don't think I've ever been this excited by a game in my life. It sounds terrifying and exactly the Alien game that has been needed since they started making Alien games. Generally I wait a week or 2 after a game is released to see what the verdict is on it, but this is a day one purchase for me. The Nostromo package especially.

This would be a must buy if it wasn't for Colonel Marines. I was burned bad by that game and it's made me a little hesitant to pick up any Aliens games for a while. If I hear good things I might pick it up later.

The gameplay reminds me of Enemy Zero but with the Alien coat of paint. Not a first-day for me, but I will pick this up in time.

I've only heard good things so far on isolation. The game has already gone gold. Reviews will be out before the game launches is my guess. We'll know rather soon how good it is.

I forced myself to play through Colonel Marines with a friend since we pretty much play everything co-op... my god it's an embarassment... almost hilariously bad. But in the end, it's a completely different development team working on Alien Isolation, so I'm giving them a blank slate.... What's interesting is that Creative Assembly has really only been known for the Total War series on the PC which is a strategy game. To me, that means my purchasing decision will be based largely on reviews... No giving the benefit of the doubt like I do with other developers. I don't think it'll be anything worse than 7 or 8 out of 10 rating... I have my doubts it'll be in the 9+ range (I hope so though!!)

So reviews for this are super freaking conflicting. Some are scathing, pointing out how frustrating it is, yet some are giving nothing but high praise complimenting everything that the other reviews critisized.
From what I gather from each verdict, it seems like this game is in every sense a survival game and hyper realistic. It doesn't offer too much help and the bad reviews seem to come from the frustration of constant death or backtracking through the ship, testing your skills and nerves. Which to me seems the point of this game in the first place. I'm kind of sick of games these days that make it too easy on you eg: Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Last of Us, Assassins Creed etc which are incredible games in terms of story and gameplay of course but offer no challenge. By that I mean if you die, you don't have to earn your way back. You can die as many times as you want and it will just reload pretty much at that moment. Running and jumping into a haystack and waiting 5 seconds is less of a challenge than hiding in a locker and holding your breath, depleting your health while the Alien searches for you and if you let out a single gasp you're dead. This sounds exactly like the best Alien game to me.
I think I'm going to buy this game regardless because even the bad reviews state that when its good, its amazing. Hopefully I don't eat my words.

I understand your point, but at the same time, this isn't the old quarter machine days. I don't want 3 lives and then back to the beginning. Save/ check points are crucial nowadays in hours long games. I don't want to lose 3 hours worth of progress because I peeked my head out a little too far.

I'm not one to normally rely only on IGN reviews to steer my opinion of a game, but I think their review has convinced me not to pick this game up. Hearing that it's a 15-20 hour long experience turns me right off to Alien: Isolation. I love the concept of sneaking around a ship and trying to not alert the one alien that's on board, but if I have to do that for 15-20 hours, I'm out. Nope. I am terrible at stealth games to begin with but imagining myself spending that length of time moving slowly through corridors where one mistake could mean death doesn't do it for me. It sounds like the worst missions in Assassin's Creed for 15-20 hours.
For the record, the podcast hasn't discussed the game yet because it comes out tomorrow. So I'm sure we'll hear about it either this week or next.

Played a couple hours of it last night. Terrifying. But you're absolutely right, for anybody who doesn't like stealth games and the thought of sneaking around should give it a miss. But in terms of survival horror games and especially fans of the original Alien film, pick this up. Amazing atmosphere. I'm only about 3 hours in and I can't imagine it getting more suspenseful. Every flickering light freaks me out. Also as a side note, many of the reviews seem to skip the fact that there are people you need to /interact with or avoid/fight/kill in order to get through certain areas so its not just all hide and wait for the Alien for 15 hours. Also death is not a problem as long as you save when you have the chance (phones scattered throughout the map), but don't expect autosaves to help you.

Have no fear, we'll be talking about this game on the next podcast. I have both positive and negative things to say about it.

Hearing that it's a 15-20 hour long experience turns me right off to Alien: Isolation. I agree with this. My gaming time is so limited as it is now, and it just sounds like too much of a good thing. It was mentioned on an IGN podcast that they wondered if the devs started with a 6-8 hour game but were forced to turn it into a 20 hour game to justify the $60 price tag. That would be a shame. I think survival horror is much more digestible at the 6-10 hour range. Throw a $40 price point on that and I'd be much more interested. I expect RPGs and open world games over 20 hours.... don't expect or even want that for survival horror.

Though I do appreciate the fact that they went the route of having it be 15-20+ hours instead of it being incredibly short like some other games on the current gen consoles. But after watching gameplay footage and quick-looks I can't imagine sitting down for 20+ hours with this game. That being said, I may pick it up when it drops in price just because I love the original Alien movie so much.
