I got an email this morning from Comixology letting me know that they are now making available DRM free downloads of comics for backup purposes where the publishers allows it. Currently this includes Image, Dynamite, Zenescope, MonkeyBrain, Thrillbent, and Top Shelf.
This includes everything I've already bought, so there are now around 200 books waiting for download as either PDF or CBZ. Unfortunately there is no batch download option and you need to select them one at a time...
It would be great it Marvel and DC offered this too (I can dream...) but for the companies that do offer it I know this answers one of the big concerns people have about buying books in digital format. Hopefully this is the start of more to come.

I'm glad they worked this out and that we can actually own the comics we buy on there! It would be pushing it to have DRM-free Marvel and DC comics too but I do agree that this is a big step for comixology.

The scary thing is, I always assumed that if something were to happen to comixology they would offer some way to move your collection before they shutdown their site, but this tells us it is not really up to them. I think it will be a very long time before Marvel and DC offer free back-ups. The other publishers want you to share their books with people who might be interested in picking up more. Marvel and DC really have nothing to gain from it.

THey are doing this, but so is Dynamite themselves. Check it out.

Everyone using Comixology is probably already aware of this, but a whole raft of additional independent and smaller publishers are now offering DRM free backups through Comixology. The new ones are:
IDW Publishing, Valiant Entertainment, Oni Press, Fantagraphics Books, Aspen Comics, Action Lab Entertainment, Th3rd World Studios, A Wave Blue World, Blind Ferret Entertainment, Caliber Comics, Creative Impulse Entertainment, Devil’s Due Entertainment, GT Labs Comics and Kingstone Media
