I'm on the same boat as you guys: although the two are very different movies, I think this one is actually a little bit better than the Avengers. It was fantastic on pretty much every note--but you guys gave it enough adulation that all of my points are pretty much covered. What I will say boils down to just a few thoughts--Spoilers do abound!
First, I love that they took a cue from Secret Warriors with the whole HYRDA/S.H.I.E.L.D. relationship. I hope that if there is some sort of Nick Fury or S.H.I.E.L.D. film in the immediate future, they'll adapt the remainder of the Secret Warriors story; it would certainly fit in the continuity, and if it's done right, I think it could be great. The reveal of it was fantastically done; the entire scene, in fact, with the cracked photo of Howard Stark in the bunker and the newspaper clipping detailing his death, was very, very haunting.
Second, despite my love for the climax and Cap's speech to the S.H.I.E.L.D. employees, as well as their rallying against the HYDRA-puppet-agents, I will say this: it was pretty difficult to watch pretty much all of them, with Agent 13 as the notable exception, be indiscriminately slaughtered and gunned down in every other scene. It's not really that big of a deal, and it doesn't much detract from how much I loved the scene and, really, the whole movie, but I did notice it.
Third: the comic connections! Batroc! Crossbones! DOCTOR STRANGE!
Fourth, a very silly nitpick: If HYDRA are all Nazis and fascists, why is it that the Winter Soldier's dossier and information is written in Russian, or that he's got a red star on his arm? Those are the symbols of the Soviet Union and Socialism--and philosophically speaking, Fascism and Socialism are utter opposites!
Lastly, I LOVED the highway scene. Not only was it a major moment for the drama of the film, but it also has some of the coolest set movements in the entire movie. Captain America is thrown from a highway and into bus which is then struck by a truck, flipped over, and BLOWN UP!

So excited for Steve to be going back and reading Ultimate Spider-Man. The exact same thing happened to me in the past months where I started with Death and have not been able to put Ultimate Spider-Man down since. 30 volumes of stuff is daunting but when you know the quality is consistent its not a problem. I just got up to date with the Miles stuff and have just finished Volumes 1 and 2 of the original run and am in no way stopping for a break.
Steve you mentioned yu started with Death of and was wondering did you read Prelude? Because I started with that in trade and, knowing whats to come, that book is FULL of those great emotional moments and just leaves you, if not with a tear in your eye, at least a very tight chest. And I've found now that I know the outcome after over a decade of history, reading from the start has a much more emotional impact because you're seeing things happen and you know what it will amount to. So I don't know how you plan on tackling this series again but I'm really excited to hear your thoughts.
As for Cap. What is there left to say? As a mostly DC fan, this movie is my favourite superhero movie of all time. It managed to use the subject of my favourite comic series of all time yet be completely original so you were left guessing. Take away the superhero factor, this was just a great action movie. And it had a way better Anakin/Obi-Wan moment than Star Wars ever did. When you guys were talking about the scenes that introduce the Winter Soldier, I got goosebumps all over again. And especially that moment where he peeks into the car to see that Nick Fury is gone, thats almost a horror movie moment, he was genuinely intimidating. I've never felt that about a character before
I went and saw it a second time the next day just so I could sit back and enjoy it more. And I want to go see it again. I just keep thinking about it and how much I enjoyed it.
It made me instantly online and pre-order the Winter Soldier Hot Toys figure. Seeing as I'm in the last stages of planning my wedding (Bobby I hope things are going well with your plans) dropping $200 on a figure may need to remain a secret until it arrives later this year where I can act all "Oh yeah I pre-ordered that AAAAAGES ago *pulls at collar*". But it looks magnificent. That hair....
Speaking of hair, yep. That scene with Black Widow's hair got me too, once second it's all dirty and curly and wet. The next its FLAWLESS. Maybe she can Widow's Bite her hair into straightness...??

I panic bought a copy of the second Rachel Rising volume thanks to Mara. I think Bobby was right about the Pod helping sales.

Another great episode. I have the same anger problems when it comes to people talking in movies, I'm normally a very mellow and quiet guy but talk through a movie im interested in and you've pretty much set me from Banner to Hulk. This film is my favorite comic book movie made, I think its absolutely perfect. The Winter Soldier/Bucky definitely had that Terminator/invincible villain feel which I loved and the fight scenes were the best fight scene I've seen in a comic book movie. Like Tooth this film also made me pre order the Winter Soldier Hot Toys figure which will actually be my first comic book figure since I collect mostly Star Wars. My gf who isnt a comic reader even loved the film, she got to be 5 ft from Sebastian Stan at SDCC last year (I was getting a sketch done while this happened....) and has been anticipating this film because of him since then. She did let out a little "Ohhh.... Wow..." when Evans was in the tank top as well, I had to make sure I reminded her that even if I tried I could never look like a super hero the way he does. This movie has me so excited for whats to come, it even has me considering giving Agents of SHIELD another shot. ![]()

Whew, I didn't expect to have both of my Captain America: Winter Soldier comments read on the air.. I swear I loved the movie! I do have to disagree with your points on the end credit sequence though, specifically the thought that most people will take to the Internet to look up what they don't know. More and more I've been noticing people either leaving before the credits or, after sitting through them, having absolutely no response whatsoever. During my Captain America: Winter Soldier screening, someone said, "Okay..like we're supposed to know who that is?" Even my wife, who reads a fair share of comics that I shove in her face, is getting a little tired of seeing these teases because they're not really all that meaningful. I think there's a difference between the teases leading up to the Avengers and these Marvel Phase Two ones. Seeing The Collector or Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch is not the same to me as seeing Nick Fury tell Iron Man about the "Avengers Initiative." Don't get me wrong, I'm still geeking out over these moments, but I don't think they are having the same effect comic book readers think they are having on the general public.

The movie was great. A fun part for me was that my wife knows I love the Winter Soldier but never read the storyline. She was genuinely worried about the characters during the highway chase scene. Especially for the character who was shot. Don't wanna spoil anything so I'm being vague.

Once again, great podcast. I agree with you guys, the body count was unnerving for me -- especially the scene launching the helicarriers. But it was also unnerving for me -- and I get that this is weird -- I was unnerved by the idea that there were this HUGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE who would think that working as a Hydra mook was a good and reasonable thing to do!!! This is something I've always thought in comics -- where does Zemo find these guys? -- but seeing it on the big screen with real people made me wonder.
Loved the movie though. I thought the post credit sequence was weak compared to others, we've already seen pictures of Wanda and Pietro online ... this was not a reveal.

To be fair, it was a reveal for all of the people in the audience who don't follow the films as closely as some of us do. For some it's a total "who the hell are those two?" moment. Additionally, thanks so much for your kind words about the show!
