One of my friends on Twitter got me into this. I just finished all the eps on Netflix and I want more now! I've never watched anime before so the style took a little getting used to, but I'm totally sucked in to the world and characters. Anyone else watch? I'm even thinking of seeking out the manga to find out what happens next.

I watched it up to episode 22 and just haven't managed to get back to it yet. I'm a little on the fence about the story, not because of the plot or anything, but rather because of how milquetoast is find Eren to be, it's kinda painful to watch or read something where you find the supporting cast more interesting than the main character. Heads up for the Manga if you seek it out, the anatomy is a bit odd and it threw me off a little.

Thanks for the warning on the manga! I agree that Eren is the least interesting part of the show, but I'm engaged enough by the plot and invested in the supporting characters enough that I can tolerate him. I actually got into AoT through one of my Twitter friends posting about Levi a lot, so I was sort of watching the show and waiting for him to arrive. My faves are Levi and Mikasa, with Armin close behind.

Loved this show so much!!!! There's something about the screaming voice cast that gave the subtitles such emotional weight!!

I'm not sure about how quickly this shows up on Netflix but you can get it for free 1 week after it airs on Crunchyroll, the same day if you pay the subscription fee (which is totally worth it for any anime fan).

Just curious, AoT is rated TV-MA. Can someone mention specifically what would rate it an MA title?
I watched the first episode with my 12yr old last night, finger on the stop button the whole time, just waiting for something awful to happen. The closest thing was at the end when a Titan grabbed the mother and made like he was going to rip her in half, but the camera cut away before that happened, and after that there was some very theatrical raining blood, but that was pretty much it.
We are going to try out the second episode tonight. If anyone has any other suggestions that we might find on the non-paying side of Crunchyroll that would be appropriate for 12yr old's that would be great! Oh, and they can't stand stuff like Dragon Ball Z, or anything else that takes 14 episodes to resolve a single fight....

We see characters getting arms bitten off, characters getting eaten, all without the cut away. I'm not sure if any of this is edited for the English release but the gore gets pretty explicit in the Japanese version.

Yeah, it gets quite gory later on. If your 12-year-old is O.K. with the gore then I don't really think there's anything else too mature in it, at least so far.

Any recommendations for a series, preferably one that is only a season or two along, old or new, that a 12yr old would like?

Found this by accident and got absolutely addicted - watched the lot pretty much in 4 days, I love the concept and after 25 episodes you still know very little about how the world got the way it did. The person behind the pacing for me is a genius, I get itchy feet every episode but the story unfolds just enough each time that I was 'quick next episode... now, NOW!'.
I also like how they put in a lot of real-world reactions to such a situation with the various wall dwellers thinking they are wasting tax payers money and wasting human life on their forays outside the wall. Others worship and are inspired by them, the government and military factions with different agendas - this is what good anime is all about to me, its produced not telling you what or how to think but inviting you to make your own call.
Having just read then watched the Death Note anime and following it with AoT straight away I feel spoilt as I've loved them both - Death Note is good and I'd have no problem with a 12yr old watching it as it is more about the machinations of the main characters than it is graphic violence.
One they may enjoy but I can only recommend after watching a feature length anime movie is 'Hunter X Hunter', lots of action but only bruises and bloody noses and black eyes even though they are throwing punches that make walls explode - great fun!
