This is a discussion I have had with numerous people in many and different ways but I'm interested to hear all of your thoughts on the matter.
How do you go about trimming your pull list? When do you know it's the right time to do so? And on the topic of that question: How do you know which books to drop? When do you know you're going to drop a book? Do you drop a book mid story or finish the arc out?
Really interested to hear everybody's thoughts on the matter.

about 4 or 5 months ago i was spending 60-70 bucks a week and that shocked me. So i figured it was time to start trimming. What i did was notice what books i was reading just to read. Some books i was buying just to keep up with the story and when i thought about it, i really could do without them. Not that they were bad, but they didnt have me waiting for the next issue. If i continued to hear good things i would pick up the trade. i cut about 6 books off my pull list without really trying and honestly i havent missed them.

There's a few reasons I'll drop a title, mainly though if it continually becomes stuck in cross overs with multiple other titles, if I feel a books story isn't living up to its price tag or if there is no coherent arc or progression in a story within 10 issues I tend to let it go. I tend to do a refresher on my pull list every 6 months or so and drop books I've fallen too far behind on also.

Once I notice I'm losing interest I give it a couple of issues then trim. I'm sure its the same with a lot of people but titles that I feel I'm enamoured with I'll stick with regardless. Swamp Thing could be 30 pages of Swampy straightening a picture frame and I'd argue it was a comment on the fickle nature of western society.

I actually haven't really trimmed that much. I'll trim a book every once in a while. Especially when I'm paying over $40 a week sometimes. I just took off HInterkind, which is the first book I've trimmed in a really long time. I am kinda picky about what I put on my pull list in the first place so that's probably why.

Unless I completely lose interest, I normally give it until the end of the first arc. Hinterkind will probably be an example of this, I'll give it the first 5 or 6 episodes, then if further down the line it gets really good I can just pick up the trades without buying the first one.

I tend to follow creative teams rather than a book but I'll always give them a few issues. If something takes my fancy I'll grab the #1. I was very picky about what I got but recently I'm trying new things, random books and a ton of recommendations from people & podcasts many of which I end up not following but I'm okay with trying. The best thing is trying a book, not enjoying to writing but loving the art and then finding a gem from that artist later down the line. Can't limit your exposure to talent.

There is a couple of ways that I go about cutting a title from my rotation. If it is a new series, and it doesn't pull me in within 2-3 issues...I am gone. If it is a long running series <Marvel/DC ect> and a new creative team has come on the book, the same thing. I will give it a couple of issues to see what they are going for. There are a couple of exceptions...if it is a series that I have been collecting from the start, and i don't want a break in the numbers, then I will keep going -_- That is my sickness is a way.

I'm a digital and trade only reader so I just can't wrap my head around collecting and buying books only for that purpose. On the over hand I waste money on plenty of things I don't need so its all the same in the end really isn't it. Whatever makes you happiest.

For work I do have to keep up with the new stuff as it comes out, so single issue form is the easiest way for me to do it.

This is though for sure. I kind of made a New Years resolution to be more diligent of what I buy. I don't have a lot of expendable cash or time really to read a ton of books so I and trying to keep my pulllist to a cost of $50 to $60 a month. I tend to buy trades and other collectables So I can't spend to much on comics. I told myself to be more swift with cutting stuff I am not reading. I am one of those old school people who sometimes collects just to keep a series intact even if I am not reading it so I have been better about cutting things that I just don't read. I also have had to try to limit books of a certain character like Batman. Don't want 5 books all about the same character but with the quality is some of the Superman and Batman books it has been hard especially with Batman eternal to come.
I also stick to Marvel and DC if I want something from someone else I'll wait for the trade. I know there are great books out there by other publishers but I have to stay away or I could risk getting sucked in. The only exeception is the upcoming Turok series. I am a huge Turok fan so can't pass it up.

I'm really enjoying hearing everybody's opinion so far.
With me I'm trying to be more conscious of what books I NEED to read and what books I pick up just to read. Like right now I have 30 books on my pull. With the upcoming All-New Marvel NOW there are definitely some titles I want to pick up, but to do so I'm going to need to drop some books. Not because I have to, but because I really need to focus on only picking up books I'm excited to pick up every month. That will mean dropping some titles I've stuck with since the beginning. But it's never easy. You don't want to drop a book mid-story so I tend to read until the end of the arc. I just need to devise a way to know "Alright, I'm not sold on this. I don't care if I'm 2 issues in, I'm dropping this." Easier said than done though.

You feel like you're part of the readership and if you stop buying it you're betraying the artist/writer. I'm having a hard time with the Walking Dead. I really want to finish All Out War but it's a 12 issue arc... I'm really starting to become uninterested in it. I already don't remember what happened in the last issue, and that usually doesn't happen to me. It sucks because I've read TWD from the beginning and I don't want to give up hope.

I find there are some things that I will stick with because I love the characters so much and that gets me through a bad arc but others I'll drop if the new arc doesn't grab me in its first plot set up issue. I've done this with Ironman after the 'secret origin of tony stark' and Indestructible Hulk when he teamed up with dare devil after an arc with Thor. Dare devil just leaves me cold, especially after the movie. I always drop stuff with no guilt as I always plan to go back to see their next arc. I plan to go back to Hulk as the currant arc sounds really good. I'll also go back if it starts getting good reviews on the podcast, especially if it's from bob as I know it will get cancelled soon. I read exclusively on digital as I learnt from having a 1000+ VHS and dvd's that having space in your home for the wife and kids leads to a more harmonious environment all round so this too makes it easy to drop things as there is no physical hole in a collection to bug you.

My LCS, which I love a lot, doesn't offer any kind of discount on a pull list (though I get other discounts that aren't as useful to me, like trades and graphic novels). In the long run, I think this is kind of a blessing, because over the past year I've whittled down my pull list to next to nothing. Yeah, I run the risk of forgetting something, but it's a large store that stocks well, I rarely have any problem catching up. This has allowed me to be really choosy. I hate to drop a book, because I know they ordered my copy for the next three months in advance, but I'm done buying stuff I don't like out of habit. It's bad for comics and bad for my wallet. It's also allowed me to transfer more to digital. I don't like or want to collect the actual books anymore, they take up space. For a long time I wouldn't pay the same price as physical for a digital book, but I'm slowly converting. Now, the only physical monthlies I buy are the books I share with my kids.
