I am a big horror film fan. But not over-the-top gore horror. I think a good horror story needs great characters and tension before it needs anything else. Films like 28 Days Later, The Descent (both of which though gory still great tension), John Carpenters The Thing, Jaws etc. All of which have great characters and tension throughout them. And since reading The Wake which I feel meets this standards. I've been craving more of this in comics. I picked up Scott Snyder's Severed and was blown away by that. But past Scott Snyder I don't know where to look and and whenever I search "Horror Comics" its always that blood and guts Creepy Comics style which isn't the same. What are some other great horror comics out there that anyone thinks are similar in tone to these?

You HAVE to check out American Vampires. It's (obviously) got some vamp stuff in it, but it's the true horror vampires. Scotty Snyder also writes it, as well as Stephen King (maybe King is just on the first trade).
It's really really good.
I'd say my favorite genre of comics is definitely horror/thriller. I love the art that comes along with it and just everything about it.
I also really enjoy Ten Grand (or anything really that is drawn by Ben Templesmith),
I'm blanking on other ones right now but I'll let you know.

Steve Niles 'Criminal McCabre'. Lots of different artists and reasonably priced omnibus collections.

Steve Niles 'Criminal McCabre'. Lots of different artists and reasonably priced omnibus collections. I second this. You should also check out Fatale. It's like a crime/noir book with occult themes. I love it. It's coming to an end soon but there is like 20 issues so it's still a good amount.

Criminal McCabre has been one that has been in my hands on more than one occasion and then fallen into the "Next time, baby" pile Does anybody know of anything less supernatural based? I think thats what I loved so much about Severed and what frightened me the most about it was its more grounded premise.

Good suggestions so far. Probably seems obvious, but Locke and Key is fantastic. Another horror comic I love is Joshua Hale Fialkov's "Echoes." It is a story about Brian Cohn, who seems to have a great life. He's married, expecting his first child, but has dealt with knowing his father suffers from schizophrenia and that he may suffer from it as well. As Brian learns more about what his dad did, he fears for his own sanity. The art is b&w and very disturbing at times. There is some gore, but the real focus is on Brian and his relationship with his father, and how he decides to move forward and whether he can escape the same fate as his dad, and whether his own child may suffer similar issues.

I'm currently reading Wraith - Welcome to christmas land which so far has been excellent. Also reading John Carpenters Asylum, which is a pretty standard demonic possession, ex priest turned demon hunter sort of affair. And Rachel Rising, which is brilliant.

Steve Niles/Bernie Wrightson with the sequel to Frankenstein (called Frankenstein Alive,Alive) and if you like the older EC stuff try Haunt of Horror from IDW?? Maybe?? Lol and I also agree with American Vampire and Locke & Key but also want to throw in the comic adaptions of The Stand and The Dark Tower from Marvel

Yep the Steve Niles Frankenstein Alive Alive is amazing. Although I'd completely forgotten it, how long has the delay between issue #2 and #3 now? Worth the wait though. The big hardback edition of Frankenstein illustrated by Bernie Wrightson is amazing.

If you aren't super into supernatural stuff I would still recommend Fatale. The supernatural themes are very minuscule. They play a big part into the explanation of why things are the way they are, but it's pretty rare that Brubaker even brings it up. If you are trying to stay away from the supernatural it's a little bit harder (for me, at least) to pick out something from the horror theme. The Stand is also really well done, although I only read the first trade.

I'd concur with Fatale and American Vampire. Same with The Strain if you ever get the chance to read that. Or you could just watch the show but still...

Better late than never to reply to this I guess. But Agreed on the Strain. I haven't read the comics, but I've read the books and have been watching the show. I love the concept and I love where it went in the final book (no spoilers for those who haven't read it), but I honestly think it works better as a show. Reading the book I could tell Guilermo wanted this to be a film or series but got it out there as a book as it takes less time to produce and release. It had the pacing and almost episodic feel so it's exciting re-living the story on a week to week basis now. Has anyone here read Foster? It's a creator owned book by Brian Buccelatto. I love his Flash run and the current Detective so I ordered this from my store as it has a great premise. Not a lot of info on the internet about it either so I'm excited to go into something new and completely fresh. Hopefully its good :S

If you liked "Severed", you'll probably also like "The Stand". Adapted from a Stephen King story. Alan Moore's run of Swamp Thing is a great horror comic, at least that's how I feel about that one.
Aaaaaaand...
Japanese master of horror, Junji Ito.
Uzumaki is a masterpiece, I would recommend to start with that. then Gyo, that's also a great one. Tomie is his first book, the drawing is not yet as good as his later books, but the story is also very disturbing.

Rachel Rising, Strange Kisses/Strange Killings books and the BPRD line all come to mind as well.
