Hello everybody. Just saw Rogue One. I am not an Star Wars affiicionado but have seen all the movies in the theatres during their original release date so I'm an old timer. I loved this movie. I will go so far to say (and Mara this will probably piss you off) it is better than A New Hope In my opinion the 2nd best Star Wars after Empire Strikes Back. The hook for me is the emotional connections between all the characters. It takes a lot to get me to get teary over a movie. Jyn and her father, the plea of Saw to Jyn, seeing how the Deathstar was used against individual cities which to me which I can't adequately explain was more wrenching than the destruction of Alderaan plus so many more. Maybe because at a contextual level it is closer to Empire than the other films is why I love it so much. The acting overcomes in my opinion an average script. Felicity Jones knocks it out the park. I wish they had explored the Cassian character a little more but Luna is good in his role.Mendlesohn as Krennic steals the show. I love that the movie grounded itself in the reality (SPOILER ALERT) of the probable outcome of rebels/revolutionaries. No sugarcoating , no surviving impossible odds but the acts make the legend and inspires the rebellion to go on. I really have only 2 major quibbles with the movie. If he was there as comic relief I did not find K-2SO that funny I don't know if it was the lines or how they were delivered but I only laughed at maybe one of his "jokes". And the use of Vader in his scene with Krennic should have been on the cutting room floor. If they had saved him for the boarding of the rebel ship at the end and had disguised it as Tarkin saying something on the com link like " The rebel have the the transmission. Stop them"The way it was filmed with the storm troopers breaching the the ship and in the darkness you hear Vader's breathing before he opens his light saber would have drove the audience wild. But still a movie I believe Star Wars fans should be proud of.

I just saw "Rogue One", and without giving away too much of what I'm sure we'll be discussing on-air, I'm in almost total agreement with your points, particularly about Cassian, whom I'd love to learn more about. Frankly speaking, i'd love to learn more about all the new characters, as even in limited time, they were all great additions to the mythos.

I want to first off say that I really liked this movie, the third act was just great and the Vader scene at the end was fantastic. But...there is always a but, beside Jyn, there was no backstory or emotional connection to the other characters and I think that hurt the first two acts for me.

Matt, If I had one complaint about the film, it's that I wanted more from that second act; a greater depth in character development might have made the set-up flow a little more smoothly, even without cutting anything else out.

Bob,
I agree with you. In the third act, I still felt for these characters, but if that character development was there for the other characters. I might have been crying.

Matt,
It wouldn't have taken much in the way of running time to bring those characters a "reel" life; perhaps in the extended edition?

Bob,
I'm shaking my head in disgust at that pun! I will see what the good doctor has to say on the star wars podcast that you'll promised!

I'm looking forward to that show myself! There's so much about the Extended Universe that I don't know, so who better than the Good Doctor and the Erudite Professor to teach me!
