Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opened this week and the Talking Comics crew is here to review it. We do a full non spoiler section and then dive deep into what we think of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the whole deal. We also dive into a full breakdown of DC Rebirth and what we think of the new books and the teams involved.
Here is the chart we mentioned during the DC Rebirth discussion.
A lot of interesting discussion this episode. Haven't seen the movie yet but will go into it with an open mind. I'm lucky that in a couple months I'll catch it in the dollar theater.
Rebirth has me so stoked though. At one point I was buying more DC than Marvel but that hasn't been the case for years. This Rebirth has me totally on board for at least Blue Beetle (Ted and Jaime the best of both worlds) and Red Hood. I know people don't like Lobdell but he did write some amazing X-books and his take on Red Hood is the best since Winnick. Also he got better with Starfire later in the series. Wonder Woman looks amazing and I'll try to keep a spot open for an eventual New Gods or Legion.
I know the big criticism online has been a lack of gender and POC creators, but I have faith that like Marvel the next waves will bolster those numbers in a big way. I also have the most faith in the fact that Geoff Johns is so involved. While it would have been nice to have more balance out of the gate, I think I'd rather see the diversity with the right characters on the right book.
And boy, I will be picking up whatever Tula Lotay draws. I fell in love with her art on Supreme Blue Rose.
Just finished listening to the episode and I pretty much agree with the general census in regards to Batman v Superman. I think there is a lot of good casting that's ruined by poor editing and pacing. There is definitely a good movie in there somewhere.
In terms of the representation of women with DC's Rebirth, I would really be interested to find out how many women DC reached out to in order to get their pitches.
Listening to some of the noises coming out of DC and notable absences from certain female creators I do wonder if there will be further phases in rebirth otherwise it seems like they've just let talent walk. The cynic in me wonders if the next phase will just happen to be after Nightwing, Cyborg etc. fail to meet 'expectations' as bi-monthly and revert to monthly titles so they will introduce JSA and other titles, I know Johns has said JSA will happen but it deserves a big story [translation: Event?!?].
I certainly think DC are getting pitches from female creators as from those I follow on Twitter they seem to be sending multiple pitches weekly so I'd be amazed if at least a few aren't aimed in DCs direction.
P.S. I appreciated the pre-warning on the sound quality but it was fine once I adjusted some settings on my mufflers so once again thanks for a fantastic podcast all.
