I'm not sure what everyone thinks of Man of Steel but i thought share what i think whether anyone wants to read is up to you, i only saw it for the 1st time a few days ago mainly prompted by this article www.popoptiq.com/man-steel-myth-great-comic-book-movie/
All i can say is shame on the people of Earth for not recognising this for the cinematic masterpiece it is and the superhero film of our generation that reflects everything about the world and beyond. Maybe 5 or maybe 10 years from now the film will get the recognition it deserves.
First i'll talk about the final fight between Zod and Superman, maybe people complain about how this is portrayed. This fight could not be done like 2 guys having a bar brawl, or some stylised choreographed fight that becomes meaningless. I'm glad the film did something different; the fight is chaotic, and filled with a furious rage. These are 2 aliens with powers that human can't comprehend, and i loved they way they interpreted the fight as these insanely quick blasts of movement.
As for Zod, he is someone who is genetically engineered to be a warrior, and he became the greatest warrior on Krypton. His entire purpose for existence is to protect the beings of Krypton, and preserve their race. So once you take away someones sole purpose of existence they are going to be pretty pissed off. For me he is an anti-hero not a villain. The element of the story about different beings that are bred to be warriors, workers, scientists etc is of course taken from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Jor-El is the greatest scientist that Krypton has ever seen, and i think it would have been nice to see more of Superman's Mum.
One of my main loves of the film are the visuals i had seen 2 previous Snyder films The Watchmen and Sucker Punch and i thought both were terrible. I can't believe Man of Steel is directed by the same guy, maybe Christopher Nolan helped him steer the ship. I love that scene with Superman drifting down underneath the sea after the oil rig scene where he seems to find some solace or an eternal peace at last, then we have the flashback to his childhood and then we see him shot from below drifting upwards and then a whale with its baby swimming alongside passes overhead. It is such a beautiful visual image of life and hope.
Another moment is the scene in which Zod is showing Superman what he intends to do to the world so that Krypton can live again. We see Superman standing on top of a sea of skulls with his ruined home in the left of the shot with the sun in the background, Superman is then dragged underneath the sea of skulls.
We have this visual image again of Superman being dragged underneath a sea but this time it is a sea of death rather than a sea of life.
The last visual scene i'll mention is probably my favourite, and in it we see Superman fully take control of his enormous power. The scene in which Superman battles the world engine or gravity weapon. The world engine is a stunning concept, those scenes in Metropolis of the world engine creating an enormous gravity shift is astonishing. The sound for those scenes is incredible it reminded me a bit of the lightning scenes in Spielberg's War of the Worlds. So we get to the scene with Superman standing at the bottom of the world engine out in the Indian ocean, his powers draining but summons his strength with a shot close in on his face, the shot then becomes this enormous vista of the world engine and the horizon in the background, it took my breath away. Superman then fly's straight up towards the engine with a great roar and smashes through it. That is why cinema was created so we could see visuals of stunning cinematic grandeur to take us away from our own lives and worries.
I have to mention as well the great scenes between Kevin Costner and the young Superman, all those early childhood scenes were really well done. For me they had a great emotional pull, for anyone like me who has lost a father at a young age i'm sure they would appreciate those scenes.
Lastly i'll mention the music, the music really makes this film stand out for me, Zimmer's score is at times ethereal, and otherworldly and when it needs to be it's epic, that Superman theme that keeps re-occurring just grabs me by the heart every time i hear it.
This film for me is full of heart and hope and i love it, it takes me somewhere beyond my own life.
