hi, everybody!
thought it might be a nice idea to have a thread where people can talk about complete series that they have been reading, or were thinking about reading.
so, if anyone has a question about a particular run of a character, or jumping on points, or wants advice on what runs / series they should dive into next, they can post them here and the community can chip in with answers and suggestions
allow me to get the ball rolling.
i have read almost no captain america books, apart from his appearances in books like avengers (although i really dug how chris evans played the character so earnestly). what mini-series or runs are there that people think i should pick up? is the current stuff worth catching up on?

Great idea for a thread. On Captain America, I haven't read too much myself, but I did read and enjoy the recent Dimension Z storyline by Rick Remender. If you have read his new Black Science book and like that, chances are you'll enjoy Dimension Z as well. Both deal with issues of being cast into unknown corners of space and struggling to find a way home. For me, I'm a huge Batman fan and would love to read through Grant Morrison's run. Does anyone know the general order as far as the trade paperbacks go? I know there's The Black Glove, RIP, and whatnot, but does anyone know the correct order? (I realize I could look this up myself, but what's a forum for anyway?).

I picked up the Squadron Supreme hardcover from my LCS for $20 last week, I'm thinking of digging into that tonight. Otherwise I've been catching up on monthly comics that I've been behind on - notably All-New X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy.

I hadn't read anything of cap until the new series started with dimension Z. I really like it. A perfect jumping on point.

Don, Is that the reprint of the original Squadron Supreme 12-part "maxi" mini-series, or Death of a Universe? They are both great, but the second one reads far better with the first setting the characters in place. You'll do fine without it, as there is a brief re-cap of the mini early on, but that original series is amazing! I've said it often on-air, but Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme covers a lot of the same thematic turf as Watchmen, and did it the year before! Enjoy, Bob

Well as i previously said on other threads, i am currently getting caught up on everything Hellboy(which is gonna take me a while but i'll get there)Gotham Central, Batman Dark Victory by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale and a lot of Marvel Now stuff that i read on Marvel Unlimited like Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Young Avengers, Thor God of Thunder, Avengers and the X books.
That's why i don't buy a whole lot of new books every week, cause there's plenty of old stuff to read.

Dark Victory is a great read! in fact, anything that has Loeb & Sale as the creative team is generally awesome. Their Catwoman: When in Rome mini-series is wonrderful, as is Superman For All Seasons. i love the way they tell the story from the perspectives of different characters, and Sales' rendition of Clark/Supes ranks among my very favorite versions of the character... having said that, if you want to see their take on Marvel characters, their 'colour' books are awesome , too!

Yeah i know, they are one of my favorite teams in the business.Big fan of their stuff! I've also read The Long Halloween, For All Seasons and Spider-Man Blue by them.Really want to read the other stuff too. Sale's artwork is something you don't see every day but i really like it especially in For All Seasons which is my favorite Supes book i think, either that one or Birthright.

I've said it often on-air, but Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme covers a lot of the same thematic turf as Watchmen, and did it the year before! Enjoy, Bob Hi Bob - the hardcover I purchased is the first Gruenwald collection/omnibus. I remember reading Squadron Supreme when it was first released, but for whatever reason 12/13 year old Don wasn't affected by the big themes, I just thought it was a neat story - Marvel saying "If we had the Justice League this is what it would be like". The angsty/broken toy themes in SS went over my head, or at least I wasn't as astounded by them as other readers were - maybe because I was a devotee of Claremont X-Men and I was used to flawed characters who have self-esteem problems. I recall when I read Watchmen that it was very similar to SS, but I think all of the other things - some surface some not - distracted me enough that I didn't return to SS to really evaluate the comparison. I recall reading Death of a Universe somewhere along the line, but all I recall is that I really liked it. I'll have to hunt that down next. I'm surprised there hasn't been more interest in Squadron Supreme since Hyperion has risen to prominence in current Avengers, I know that's what caused me to pick this trade up when I saw it in the discount trade bin!

I just read my way through the Zatanna: Shades of the Past trade, and wondered if there were other Zatanna stories that were worth reading?

I've been interested in reading the flash, but am not the most savy dc guy. Any recommendations for some really outstanding stories?

Flashpoint, Flash: Rebirth, the Geoff Johns stuff from about 2000 - 2005 is pretty good. Mark Waid did pretty good run either before or after that that wasn't bad either.

Don,
Sorry I'm just catching up, but I'm new at this!
I agree with you in that I thought that Hyperion would ratchet up interest in Squadron Supreme! I know that I've chatted it up a bunch, but perhaps it's the accepted wisdom of Watchmen being the first "de-constructed" super-hero book getting in the way! (I love Watchmen by the way, I'm just making a point, so no cards or letters, please!)
As a big fan of the classic JLA, seeing their doppelgangers behaving as conflicted Marvel characters was just a lot of fun, and as the series wore on, I actually found myself forgetting that they weren't a "real" Marvel team!
Great pick-up as a discount book!
