finally another week where I have more than 1 book to talk about! whee!
Here's what I found in my pull this week:
Cluster #4
Descender #3
Rocket Girl #6
Rocket Raccoon #11
Secret Wars #1
I want to make Rocket Raccoon my book of the week just because it's the final issue, and it's a fun issue, but there was stiff competition this week and I just couldn't do it. I mentioned it in the Rocket Raccoon thread, but Rocket's thoughts and actions reflected how I feel (and how I assume, probably incorrectly, how Skottie Young feels) about the book ending for Secret Wars. The book basically wraps up what could have been a year or so's worth of stories in a single issue and Rocket basically throws up his hands and says "to hell with it all". There are some really good notes the series ends on, but it totally felt like someone barged into Skottie's office and said "we want to do secret wars so end this book or we break your legs".
Descender #3 is probably the weakest issue of the series so far in my opinion, but considering the other 2 issues that's not saying a lot. This is a really good issue with some interesting story developments character development, and the art is still gorgeous. Any other week this may have been my top book, but again, this week was very competitive.
Rocket Girl #6 almost took the top spot. For the past year I have been wondering if by the time #6 came out whether I would still care or not, and I am happy to say that this issue reminded me why I loved this series last spring. The art is fantastic and I felt like I learned a lot about Dayoung's motivations and spoiler alert: I think we meet her mom as a young 20-something! I was worried I wouldn't care about this book any more and I am happy to report that it brought me right back in.
I mentioned my thoughts over in the TCSBotW thread, but I will mention here that having not been up to speed on everything Marvel recently I found myself very lost with Secret Wars #1. I think it's an important book for Marvel right now, regardless of what I think, and I know a lot of folks really liked it. Not sure yet whether I care enough to read more, but even a cynic such as myself can appreciate an important book when I see it.
Which leaves us at my book of the week: Cluster #4. Cluster has been one of my favorite books of the last few months. The last bunch of pages of this one was enough to break my heart and they totally leave you hanging at the end. I was all "NOOOOOO!!! Need to know what happens!!!!!" If you're not reading this book you really need to at some point, even if you wait for the trade.
