Ok...I hope i get to hear some interesting feed back on this one. Which cosmic universe is the most interesting? DC or Marvel?
DC has the Green Lanterns, Yellow Lanterns, Red Lanterns..you get it...some pretty amazing stuff over the years. I have been catching up on stuff lime The Sinestro Corp. War...Blackest Night..etc. Blackest Night is in my top 5 list of the greatest stories I have ever read.
Then we have Marvel. I never really got into their cosmic stuff as a kid but now...Guardians of The Galaxy (which I was reading before they became a household name) Silver Surfer...Fantastic Four...Thanos...The Starjammers!!!!....I have a soft spot for them....Captain Marvel.
It seems that DC looks a little light on characters but if you have read Green Lantern...it has been a diverse melting pot of interesting characters and worlds. Marvel? They have Rocket Racoon and Cosmo...cmon.
I know I have missed characters and events but you get the point so....who has the stronger cosmic universe? Can not wait to see some great answers...and I am sure I will learn something and maybe even get some great recommendations on things to read.
Oh and...lets try to leave out the Indy publishers for now.

i cant really compare the two, not having read much DC Stuff but here are my 2 cents.
I pretty much got into comics reading Annihilation/Conquest and the whole DnA Stuff. and it was just so damn epic with all these different characters and there was always so much at stake. at the moment though it feels like nothing is happening, even though the guardians have like 10 books the cosmic stuff just cant live up to what it was mainly because i feel the guardians are just sitting around in their spaceship talking. i like the books, but it feels like nothing has happened since Marvel-Now began. thats why im so excited about Black Vortex, which had an awesome first issue btw.
im not really a DC reader, although im trying to change that, and green lantern is high up on my list but somehow his powerset bugs me, it just feels so gimmicky and im sure theres more out there in the DC cosmos but as someone who isnt invested in it it feels really small and simple in comparison to marvel. as someone who doesnt know better i feel its all about the quarrels between those guys with different colored rings and not much more.
so yeah for me its definitely Marvel > DC but im very open for reading suggestions to prove me wrong.

DC has the New Gods which has 2 of my favourite characters Darkseid and Orion as well as well as Big Barda, Metron, as well as the Legion of Superheroes which is a constantly changing roster of characters. There's Mongul too. Add to that the Multicolour-Corps. I wouldn't say any is better, just different and each with their strengths. But Thanos will always be Darkseid-lite to me. It doesn't get much bigger and badder than Darkseid.

I am clearly a Marvel person, but I think it's not particularly controversial to say that Infinity Gauntlet is the best cosmic story ever told. Thanos' design may have come from Darkseid, but he's grown into one of the most interesting characters in any cosmic universe. The Annihilation story has among the best artwork in a comic book.
To give DC it's due they seem to have a more consistent cosmic universe, whereas Marvel comes in starts and stops. But, overall, I don't think it's really a competition.

Totally agree with you. I got into reading comics looking to find out who the guardians of the Galaxy were after marvel announced the film. The first thing I read was annihilation which led to annihilation conquest and the Thanos imperative. I still hold this up as the best/most epic story I've read regarding the cosmic universe. Infinty came close though. I haven't read any cosmic DC stuff as I don't know where to start. Thought??......

When it comes to the cosmic stuff Marvel wins everytime for me. Annihilation, The Infinity Gauntlet, The Silver Surfer, Guardians, Captain Marvel, the list goes on. The green lantern comics have never really struck a chord. DC is something I enjoy a lot more for there street level charcters and Mystical/magic stuff.

Infinty came close though. I haven't read any cosmic DC stuff as I don't know where to start. Thought??...... Cosmic Odyssey funnily enough by Jim Starlin (who did the entire Infinity War) and art by Mike Mignola is amazing. It features the JLA in a big cosmic story. DC events are some of the best cosmic stories, Final Night and Zero Hour are good ones. Legion of Superheroes: The Great Darkness Saga is the only one I've mentioned here that is still in print but is amazing, probably one of the best. An underrated cosmic story would be Superman: Exile. Its an older one too, but its great. After executing 3 evil Kryptonians for committing planetary genocide (see, it happened in the comics first) Superman goes on a journey into space to think on what happened and the story picks up from there. He's fighting wars with crazy aliens and interdimensional robots and getting brainwashed and on and on. Really good stuff. Also features the great mirror-beard-shave moment.
