I am huge fan of characters that started off as dumb, problematic, or just used poorly being recreated in a different context and becoming something very special. reading Young Avengers, Superior Foes of Spider-Man, the recent Ant-Man Series (hey I like Nick Spencer), and many others shows how these characters can achieve a new life. I mean when I was younger who would have though Jamie Madrox would be among my favorite Marvel characters. So here's a two part question. What is your Favorite character who started off badly or disappointingly but achieved new life through another artists work. Conversely, what character in your mind is simply irredeemable (aside from ant-man of course).
Best Redeemed: Jamie Madrox, Not that he started off particularly badly, but he was very forgettable. The previous run of X-Factor made him great.
Unredeemable: Xorn, after all the various plot twists I'm not even sure there actually is a Xorn or ever was. In any case a character that existed entirely to be a plot device.

My absolute favorite Redeemed character is the New 52 version of vibe. They took a poorly thought out character and made him into an INCREDIBLY fun, accessible and interesting character. The new 52 Vibe run is still one of my favorites of these modern times.
Nonredeemable - Ben Riley, i hate him, always. People will crucify me for this, but i HATE Hush aka the toilet paper lackey, he is useless and just not interesting. I know my choices aren't the popular ones. But they are two guys that i have never understood why anyone would like them.

Irredeemable: Joker's Daughter. The premise doesn't even make sense and there's no reason she should be as strong or scary as they make her out to be.
Redeemed: New 52 Superman. They destroyed him early on but he's since been shown to be a great Clark in Action Comics. Superman isn't too bad now, either.

Irredeemable: The Scarlett Witch... Joe Quesada just announced that marvel's favorite retcon tool is actually the daughter of Mephisto!
Redeemed: Bobby Drake (Iceman)... No not really, but I wish someone would do something with the coolest original X-men...it's just sad...

Redeemed: Tefe Holland. Swampy and Abby's rapidly aged teenager wasn't handled with care upon her inception and was more recently mishandled again. Just read Brian K Vaughan's Swamp Thing run which is really a Tefe story that fleshes out her character brilliantly. Now I've got a soft-spot for her and her outlook. I'm yet to read a Vaughan story I didn't love.
Irredeemable: New 52 Constantine. It took me 20 issues but I finally stopped my subscription. No edge. No wit. None of the grimy corners of the Mystical DC. Just the same story dragged out over almost 2 years and no character development. He may as well have a wand and a Quidditch trophy.

Irredeemable: The Scarlett Witch... Joe Quesada just announced that marvel's favorite retcon tool is actually the daughter of Mephisto! I agree. Not only have I come to dislike spending time with her, but her impact on plot is invariably boring. I am terrified (TERRIFIED) that she's going to hit reboot 115 minutes into Age of Ultron.
And the thing is, for a math geek like myself, someone who can influence probability ... that's pretty damn cool. Argh.

I know everytime I see her on a cover or in a book now I cringe and spend the rest of the book trying to figure out which character she is going to screw over next. And for the love of god, can we give her a costume update...oh wait she already got one, but it was retconned out already...

I'm currently going through original Avengers series (shameless plus blog at comicdork.wordpress.com) and I have mixed feelings about Wanda. In the begining she was a much more progressive character than Wasp who was often just a doormat. So overall I like her, however given the way her character has been treated as a deus ex machina by bendis (who generally speaking I think is a good writer) I can definitly see where the irritation with her comes from.

re: scarlet witch She was fun in the recent one-shot in all-new x-factor where she and polaris go to a ren fair together.... Have to agree on Madrox. I recently read the old x-factor issues around #100 where he was all depressed and miserable and found him intolerable. The run from House of M onward was completely awesome and made me love him as a character. however, my votes for the actual question are: best redeemed: Legion. back in the day (i.e. early 90s) he seemed like a kind of throwaway character, but I recently read X-Men Legacy on Marvel U and I found it to be an amazing Legion story. don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't checked it out, but it made him a character I actually cared about. unredeemable: this one is tough as I don't think any character is really unredeemable, but if I look at it as "character I hate so much I wish it was never created", I'd have to go with Random (woo! an x-factor deep cut!). his power was he could adapt to counter any mutant power, he was dressed as the late 80s/early 90s action hero of your choice (he looked like a cross between rambo and Schwarzenegger's character from predator to me) and just generally represented everything that was wrong with comics in the 90s (even worse than Cable and all his shoulder pads and giant guns). an honorable mention goes to savage dragon. I haven't read any of it, so my opinion is fairly uninformed, but "super muscley lizard man who is also a cop" just seemed like one of the dumbest ideas ever... but then I was a huge fan of Slapstick (anyone remember him?), so take that with a grain of salt

I've learned to like her more. I don't understand why people hate her so much. No-one ever given me a real good reason, other than just not liking her.

She always had a problem with everything oli and her dad did. They basically wrote her as the nagging girlfriend. She's not as bad this season, but its hard to forget the past seasons.
