Hi Guys, just joined and been a long listener of this podcast. WELL I've come here to potentially recieve some criticism, after getting back into comics around 4 years ago and been deeply inspired by Scott Snyder and Grant Morrison I have decided to give a go at writing. The attached is so rough you could light a match of it, I hold no qualifications of have ever written before this is my first attempt at writing a story that's meaningful to me and hopefully you. Please be critical and not too mean but mainly honest, so far only my close friends have read what I am sharing with you but I would like some opinions that aren't coming through rose tinted glasses. Please read Please enjoy It's not complete - Bob Batman Script.odt (59.12 KB)

Is this meant to be a comic or a show/short?

Kinda a bit of both, it's hard to describe I am writing it as if i guess it were to be a comic book. However sometimes I end up being more descriptive as if it were a movie. I've never really done any professional script writing before so I'm not really cohering to any specific format and style, just kinda writing it how I feel if that makes sense?

Can't hurt to send it in to a publisher. Are you on twitter at all? If so, I would send some writers a DM (direct message) and ask them how they broke in to the business. It seems like they would never have time, but you'd be surprised how often you get a response. Or just email them. In my experience some of the best people work in comics and are more than willing to help.
There are also some books on the subject of how to make comics.
I often see writers will do a very rough outline of the panels they want and the words they want in each.
Also if you are serious about the craft look into "Sequential Art" majors. I know Savannah College of Art and Design has one that a few writers have come out of.
Good luck and keep at it.

i dig it man, my only issue is your format, if your aiming for a comic book script, this is rather unusual. It was hard to visualize it in comic book form. and to me thats what makes a successful comic script. just my two cents

I don't think it works just yet as a comic script simply because you've written it with too much movement in it. A comic script needs to be static images that convey the illusion of movement rather than movement itself like in film. Also you need panel and page break downs for a comic. So instead of: It need to be laid out more like this Here is an excerpt from Kyle Higgins Script for Nightwing The dialogue is clearly laid out for caption boxes and the descriptions of what Kyle wants on the page are clear and concise. There's even some image research. As for the actual story itself I'll read it when I have some more time. This is just the first thing that came out at me.

I understand the feedback that others have made regarding format, and I think these are valid suggestions. But you did by your own admission proclaim this a very rough draft. Certainly keep refining this story, and keep writing just for the expressive value. Good work so far!

Thanks everyone for the feedback it's been incredibly helpful, my goal at the moment is to just get it all written and completed then go back and format it into a comic book script. All your advice and feedback I've taken on board and will absolutely help me when I go through the whole thing when its completed with a fine comb.
I knew this was the right place to post about this.

i've been writing lately too, if your interested, id love for you to take a gander at a lil practice script ive been writing. Im no where near perfect, but maybe you can learn a thing or two from the way i format my scripts, and vice versa, ive definitely gotten some ideas from your script.

Hi, I'm new here and I can see everyone takes the craft quite seriously. I've done something quite different and wanted some feedback because you all would know more than me. I've written a graphic novel and proceeded to get it illustrated last year. I had read Persepolis and a librarian told me to go ahead with the project. I've listed it on a crowd funding site here /9701346 but you don't have to get involved unless you want to; just look at the general style of the illustrations in the video. The text goes by pretty fast on the video but you can get the idea. The paragraphs below the video tell the plot, themes, motivation and future plans for the book. I submitted this project to about a hundred literary agents who sent me lovely, polite rejection emails. I submitted to Dark Horse and other comic publishers, one of whom sent me a note that I should self publish. So that's how I ended up on indiegogo, looking for funds to self publish. Little Porcupine Goes to the Psyche Ward is not your average comic book/graphic novel. The dark tale is made even more striking by the cute animal drawings. Bad things are happening to cute animals. Please don't be shy with your opinions.
