Lately I started noticing this really weird trend that's been happening to me lately. Every time the new free games come out for the month I get super pumped, go download them immediately, and either never play them or play them for 5 minutes.
Even though a lot of the time they are really good games I have a hard time finding motivation for me to play them. I don't know what it is, but when I don't spend any money on a game I find it really hard to play through them. I think this is a really weird sensation seeing as something being "free" is usually a really good thing.
I was wondering if I was the only person who had this attitude, or if maybe the games coming out for free lately just aren't that good.
Thoughts?

I'm in the same boat as you. I rarely even play the free games. Most of the time I forget to even download them. I'm not sure why, I think it's just the heavy backlog of games I have right now. I can't even think about the free games.

I can't even think about the free games. Yeah maybe that's my problem. Even when I start them out maybe I'm telling myself subconsciously that I am wasting time that could be spent on one of the other games that I have. I feel like it's a value thing too. If I spend $60 on a new game I think I want to put more time into it because of the money I spent. Then I look at one of the free games and tell myself "meh maybe I'll get to it someday"

Mostly I find them academically interesting, just to see Microsoft and Sony try to out-market the other. I almost always grab them, but rarely play them. The game types are usually not my favorite but i have them for a rainy day when i might feel more open minded

I never really thought about them as a way of gauging what each respective company is doing.

I think that it says a lot about how they are positioning themselves in the games market. It feels like, as time goes on, Sony is leaning more heavily on independent developers whereas Microsoft falls in line with the bigger publishers ( consider also the exclusive EA Access and timed exclusives like Tomb Raider). It makes me wonder where Sony will go, there is a plethora of independent developers to lean on right now, but that climate will change sooner or later.
At the end of the day, I pay $110 per year to get roughly 70 games per year, ranging from Halo 3 to Spelunky, I cannot complain.

I have the same issue with not playing any of the free games I've downloaded from PS+ / Games with Gold. Most of the time (and especially on PS+) the games are ones I've never heard of, so I'm not exactly motivated to jump right in and play. I download them anyway though because inevitably I start to hear about the games from other outlets and suddenly I want to play them, even if it's only for a few hours. This is exactly what happened with me and Dragon's Crown.
It also comes down to the fact that I have a lot of games that I actually paid for and would rather get those completed and traded in before starting on something I got for free. In my two years of PS+ the only games I've actually finished are Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Streets of Rage 2, and Sleeping Dogs. But of course I've downloaded EVERYTHING.
