Under the Skin was the best film to come out this year (even though I think it came out last year in the UK?).
Just such a beautiful film, filled with pure sci-fi ideas.
Has anyone else seen it and also thinks it was amazing? So few of my friends have as it got such a limited release.
I had other favorites but from a film buff perspective and for originality, this one was is at the top.

I netflixed it a month or two ago; couldn't stand it. It seemed very much up its own ass, to me, and slow, boring, repetitive, with little in the way of payoff. Barely made it to the end, and even that I found extremely unsatisfying. I had high hopes for it based on the trailer, and i've enjoyed many a philosophical, arthouse flick in my time, but . . yeah, no bueno.

I would compare the film to 2001: A Space Odyssey (big call I know), in that it takes it time to build a story around an essential question: What makes us human? Or is humanity embodied as an idea that can exist in something that is outside of what is 'normal'? I love big, interesting ideas in films and really felt Under the Skin delivered this. Yeah it was very artistic (some might say pretentious but that just means it strived for intelligence, which is never a bad thing in cinema in my book) and not action packed but that comes with doing something a little different. In reference to the end, when I watched this with my wife (who also loved it) we just sat there in emotional shock - so powerful! But that is why we have lots of different types of films, something for everyone
