Shakespeare, Milton, Donne, Dickens and Swift are all canonized British writers whom everyone has at least a small familiarity for. The reasons are clear, they are fantastic writers in their genre, they bring the human condition to light and expose aspects of humanity that often times get overlooked. There are a bunch of other writers who are canonized but this is a comic book forum and I would rather we discuss who we think should be canonized from the comic medium.
One of the issues I have thought about in this dialogue is, which is more important, the writer or the story or the artist. Some writers and artists may deserve canonization but have stories that are not worthy. To solve this I say pick one writer, one story and one artist to be canonized.
My writer is, (perhaps a boring pick, but is why I am writing this post to perhaps find other writers, artist and stories outside of my usual reading habits) Chris Claremont. In my eyes he created the X-men that we know today. Yes, I am aware that he was largely absent during the 90’s of the X-Men but he did write X-Treme X-men and he wrote a slew of other stuff for Marvel as well.
My story is Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo. That is one of the most fantastic stories I have ever read. The animated movie is great and the Manga is o so wonderful. There is so much going on in that story that it takes multiple readings to soak it all in. It is a big story but worth the time and effort put into reading it. Marvel should get on re printing the colorized versions of that book.
My artist is Stan Sakai. His style is not realistic like Alex Ross, nor is it “hyper” like a Jim Lee. Sakai illustrations seem so fluid, so natural. Even when looking at a scene with many characters in it. At first glance they all look the same, but upon further inspection the minute details come out. He may be a simple artist but he knows how to draw out emotion in his work. Also he has been writing and illustrating Usagi for so long, and it still looks awesome.
Welp… those are my choices. I am interested in seeing and reading about yours.
