Wishing you a wonderful birthday! Thank you for everything you add to the podcast. I enjoy your insight and knowledge every week! Well, thanks so much "tnnsbaw" (I wish I could address you more personably!), and also thanks to Simon, Courtney, Blu, Sammie, and "D", for being part of my new family birthday celebration! I couldn't have spent it in any better company than yours, my podcast colleagues and the rest of our Talking Comics community of friends!

Chris, While I understand the sentiments behind the petition and the persuasive talking points in the pitch, I'm generally more in favor of fidelity to the source material than making socio-political statements using established characters. If the argument is that there's nothing to keep Danny from being Asian or Asian-American, there's also little to keep him from being portrayed as "Danielle" either, which opens up another kettle of fish, doesn't it? An interesting side-bar to this would be that by making Danny Rand of Asian descent it removes that "white savior" stigma, but it would then reinforce the stereotype of "super-Asian martial artist" from those films of years past!

I see your point, and it's a good one, but I am personally more uncomfortable with the "white savior" problem (which bugged me when I recently read the excellent Fraction/Brubaker/Aja Iron Fist series, my first real exposure to the character) than the "super-Asian martial artist" stereotype. As a straight white guy, I do get a bit uncomfortable projecting any authority regarding these issues. But, yeah, I can definitely see it being a six of one/ half a dozen of the other situation that might be best handled by just staying faithful to the source material.

Chris, Depending on which parts of what version of the character that they are doing, there could be a very diverse cast that might feature such folks as Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, so it's not as if it will be all white men in the cast. This is also quite far from the problems with TV's "Kung Fu" where the producers wouldn't cast Bruce Lee (as an Asian-American he "couldn't carry a series" according to network executives), but instead put terrible make-up on David Carradine, whereas in this case the lead character has always been portrayed as a white American male. If however, they were making a show about Shang-Chi and cast a white actor, you can bet that I would be unhappy about that!

Bob,
Do you have a list of the comic books that were struck down by "The Curse of Bob" (or whatever you are calling it)? I'd like to go check them out and see if they are as good as The Movement.

Mo, I don't think that I can remember them all, but for starters... Defenders (Matt Fraction) Thunderbolts/Dark AvengersFearless Defenders Red She-Hulk X-Factor (Last volume) Avengers Assemble (Just about to end) ...then there's Worlds' Finest which I had to quit due to the horrendous new pin-up art style employed once George Perez and then Kevin Maguire left!

Thanks! I notice that these are mostly Marvel books. Is this because Marvel takes more creative risks, or because Marvel doesn't market as well as DC, or because this is an incomplete list and represents just the tip of the iceberg?

The reason that the above list is mostly Marvel is a subject I didn't want to bring up, but when DC began the New 52, I lost a ton of books to the ultimate curse--the dreaded re-boot! With the cancellations I lost JSA, JLA, Power Girl, Zatanna, Birds of Prey, and Wonder Woman. Their new universe is too dark for my tastes, and so excepting Gail Simone's Batgirl and The Movement (and my trial of Harley Quinn), I don't have many DC titles left to be cursed--although one did get the axe, anyway!

OK. I'll look these up and I'll check the DC forum to see when you plan to hold the intervention ("DC you had a positive impact on my life and were an important part of my childhood, but lately I've grown concerned over your treatment of your characters and your overall dark, negative outlook....").
