So it was my birthday yesterday (yayyyy), and, helping to mark the occasion, I had the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to pick up a solid handful of issues from September 1979, the month I was born, each for a crazy-good price (and all in surprisingly good shape). The idea had never occurred to me before this year, but I thought it'd be fun to read and have-around the books that brand-new-newborn-Me would've been able to grab off the spinner rack in the hospital newsstand/giftshop area on my little way out into the world. Call me a sentimentalist
I suppose it should be no surprise that they've been a blast to pour over (and smell; does anyone else enjoy smelling old comics? that's really weird, isn't it), and I look forward to displaying some of those beautiful old(ish) time capsules on my walls for years to come, and revisiting them each year as a new birthday tradition.
Included, currently sitting in a tidy pile on my desk:
Flash #277 (cover by Dick Giordano)
The Incredible Hulk #239 (written by Roger Stern, penciled by Sal Buscema, inked by Mike Esposito, cover by Al Milgrom)
Superman #339 (written by Len Wein, cover by Dick Giordano)
Wonder Woman #259 (written by Gerry Conway, cover by Dick Giordano & Jose Delbo)
The Avengers #185-#187 (had to get the whole arc, now, didn't I; pencils by Byrne, covers by Byrne, George Perez, Terry Austin, & Gaspar Saladino)
Captain America #237 (written by Chris Claremont & Roger McKenzie, pencils by Sal Buscema)
Green Lantern/Green Arrow #120 (written by Denny O'Neil, pencils by Don Heck, cover by Dick Giordano)
JLA #169 & #170 (two issue arc; written by Gerry Conway)
Thor #287-#289 (again, the full arc; written by Roy Thomas)
and Fantastic Four #210 (written by Marv Wolfman, pencils by John Byrne)
I still have a few more to try and snag for birthdays to come, which were too pricey or otherwise unavailable this time around (World's Finest #258, Batman #315, Action Comics #499, Amazing Spider-Man #196, Daredevil #160, Detective Comics #485, Iron Man #126, Star Wars #27, and Uncanny X-Men #125, which I already have in a trade, but I want the single too, by glob, because i'm a horrible person), but I feel like I got a good start on the whole thing.
Point being, i'm curious: Anyone else 'round here have a project like this?
