Okay so somebody PLEASE tell me that know about this because I feel like I've struck gold.
Just finished reading the hardcover and feel like screaming from the rooftops. Its The Lord of the Rings meets Thor.
This comic is based on an opera from the 1800's by Richard Wagner (yes that Wagner) which has never been able to be successfully adapted until this comic.
A song from this opera is one you might know? The Ride of the Valkyrie
The opera also heavily inspired Tolkien and his writing eg; a sleeping dragon protecting his treasure in a cave, an all powerful ring that corrupts the wearer, a mountain of fire, a gangly creature that wants the ring for himself.
It draws mostly from Norse mythology so also feels very Thor eg; characters similar to Odin, Thor, Loki, Freia. Also a rainbow bridge.
It is also the story of Siegfried and Brunhilde which caught my attention because of its mention in Django Unchained.
And even though it has elements that remind you of and obviously influenced Lord of the Rings, it feels more like the current God of Thunder series in its scope and writing style. Very tragic and epic.
Also the art is INCREDIBLE. So many pages I wanted to tear out and put on my wall. Written and illustrated by P. Craig Russell (adapted I should say)
Its a big hardcover and a long read, but I did it in one sitting (4 hours later) I was totally that captivated by it.
This is a story I had no clue about if it wasn't for the fact my local store got a new copy in and one of the guys in there happened to recommend it to me. And it turns out to pretty much be the story that influenced everything I love.
Anyway. My mind is blown.
This is a $30 hardcover so its a big ask. But I hope someone else out there reads it and loves it as much as me.
