Does anybody else bother with these? I've seen a few Marvel titles have variant blank covers and my LCS wants like twice the price for them!
Saying that I have bought a couple of Skottie Young variants off of eBay today, one of which I have the intention of framing and putting up on my wall.

I only buy variants when it's art from an artist I consider to be in like my Top 5. Spending loads of cash just for a different cover just to collect just isn't worth it. To my understanding variants are pretty much a way of the industry trying to bring rarity and collectability back into comics. Due to print numbers being so high on regular print issues the comics of today will never be worth anything near what classic books from the silver age and etc... are worth. Also they are used as an incentive to get shops to push to sell more copies of certain books. If you have a 1:75 ratio variant a shop is likely to charge around $50-75 for that one copy, to try and cover cost of the copies of the regular addition that may not sell immediately. It really comes down to what you find value in.

I'm not too particular when it comes to Variant covers. To me, a comic is what's inside and while covers are nice, that's all they are. If I end up with a Variant, either due to a shipping order error or that being the only version they have of it (I've ended up with Variants for WatX more times than the actual regular issue), that's fine, but I'm not going to spend $50 for a different cover. Usually if I like a Variant cover (Skottie Young's stuff for example), I'll opt to get a print or a poster version of it instead of the comic version.

I'll be honest, I did look at getting prints of the Skottie Young covers that I liked - the thing is, they cost $30, the postage was $35 because I wanted them posted to the UK, the comics are costing me the equivalent of about $8 a piece.

Well that makes sense. If you only have to pay $8 as opposed to ~$65, I say just get the comic

I haven't really gone out of my way for variants in the past, but recently I got the Chris Samnee animal cover of the Punisher #1, and I asked my local shop to let me know if they have a Skottie Young Silver Surfer #1.

I usually wind up only buying variants if I LOVE the art on the cover or if it happens to be reasonably priced and the only thing remaining in stock ie. When I went to buy Issue 1 of Rat Queens, they were sold out, so I bought the Fiona Staples variant cover instead so I could own the first issue (in the first printing because for some reason I've started doing that). It doesn't hurt that the Fiona Staples cover is gorgeous too... I also buy covers with my favourite characters on the cover. For instance... I NEEDED to own this Tedesco All-New X-Men cover with the X-Men that I grew up with:
