And so it was that I found myself living in a time when comics were possibly better than they'd ever been, while our national currency was completely in the crapper. And, as a result, my reading habit has recently gone up in cost by a significant amount, while my wages have not. Which means I now have to figure out what I can and can't do without in terms of monthly titles, and presumably this means that I'll be doing some trade-reading in the future, if/when we get closer to parity with "the Yankee Dollar". Marvel's probably going to take the biggest hit, since they insist on including a mandatory digital code with their books for an extra dollar, which means a book that should be $3 U.S. is priced at $4 U.S., and is presently costing me something like $5 Cdn as a result (after exchange and taxes). But what else can I stand to see go? I'm not collecting much from Marvel as it is (mostly for that reason, anyway). Is anyone else feeling the pinch? What are you sacrificing, and why? Thoughts? Ugh. This is going to be a hard decision-making process. Presently, entertaining the notion of dropping some nascent titles to trade-wait, but even that feels like a bad idea.

I feel your pain. Up until a few weeks ago my LCS was charging tbe cover price on single issues & the US rate on trades. He's had to increase price 5 then 10% (& is paying 15% more because of the rates so i know he is taking a hit.). Good news is the Cdn $ is getting a bit stronger (or the US $ is getting weaker?) so hopefully we'll get closer to par. Otherwise i, too will need to think carefully about exactly what i can afford.

Yeah, my LCS held out as long as they could, charging U.S. cover on everything, but once it was clear we're in this for a while, he had to cave a bit. Still not using the current exchange rate, but oy. Kind of makes me long for the days of my youth, when I'd get a decent percentile discount on my file. :/

I've had to trim my list down by about 33% (give or take; it as almost half but not quite) due to budgetary problems. Mine has little to do with exchange rates and whatnot though and is more about RC season is about to start and I need money for car parts before we start racing. I had to pick 2 expensive hobbies... 3 if you count PC gaming. ugh!

Dude, I'm Brazilian. Our currency is broken! An American dollar is quoted R$3,20 here in Brazil, in our local currency, Real. When it comes to English language, I always preferred comics in its mother-tongue, so I used to import comics. I can't do that right now, nor any other kind of media. I was on Dischord Records online store these days and picked two CDs. It would cost me more than 100 bucks!

I am also a Canadian with the same first name as you Jason. However I live in Japan. Since I live here all the books that I buy are cover price or more from Amazon.jp. A few months ago I went to Canada to be with my family and I bought some Omnibi because they were half price on Amazon.ca. Now that I am back in Japan, I am looking at 4300 yen each for the Hickman Avengers oversized books. I want them but man that is pricey. 4300 yen is about 45 bucks in Canada. I should stop but I love comics so....

Over here in Jolly Blighty my LCS charges 10% on top of the US cover price & I know if he didn't he really couldn't stay as a Physical business in the local community, I think its difficult for a LCS in a decent sized city to survive but mine is a rural area so doubly tough.
I've increased my reading dramatically in the last 2 years and funnily before seeing this thread I had already started reviewing my pull-list and trimming. Mine is less escalating costs and more redistribution of funds - my spend on indy is growing so I am now actively trimming DC as Marvel is already pretty low for me.
Does anyone else allocate themselves a fixed amount monthly? and then spend waaaaaayyyy over!

I found some friends with similar taste in Marvel books. We divide up the list by who wants what physical book and then swap digital codes for the others. It helps a bit.
