I've had the rule of "I need to want it for a year" before I get it, but I've since changed my mind, even after wanting it for 2 years. The two ideas I've had now for a year, but I'm not sure if I want to do it/have the money to do it. I kind of want to just get a spur of the moment tat to see if I can handle it. I REALLY don't like needles. Yeah if you have never got one then I would suggest start with a small on that is in a location that's easy to hide. My first was on my foot. It was a good tester. The only problem was it was on the top of my foot so it was very painful as there basically just bone there. In a way that was good cause nothing has hurt as bad since lol. I have no issues with needles and the pain is easy to block out for me so it was fine.

I was going to get the portal symbol@joestate That's funny, I plan on doing a the portals on the tops of my shoulders. It's very common to get something going in one side and coming out the other, I thought I would play on that and do it with the blue and orange portals with maybe the stick figure on the left and a companion cube on the right.

I can handle pain as an ex-football player and cook (I burn myself pretty bad all the time), but I just freak out when I see needles. Even seeing a needle on TV freaks me out. There's a scene in dexter where someone is drawing their own blood and I threw up after seeing it. But I think a tattoo gun would be different for me. Since it's not really taking blood out of me or putting in weird chemicals (except for the ink) I think it would be fine. Plus, something cool is going to come from it. I might just have to face my fears and do it. I've been wanting one since I was like 15 and I can't stop thinking about it.

Good luck with it and let me know how it goes and what you get when you do go. All the best.

I was exactly like you for the first one I got, over 5 years I had a grand total of 10 appointments where I'd paid the deposit to get it done, got sat in the chair, then as soon as I heard the buzz of the gun I jumped up stated 'f^%k that!' and went to the pub instead. I then decided to just go with it and had my first one, the only time it hurt was when he got really close to my wrist bone, the only thing that I think you might have issues with is that if you're in the UK, then a fully registered legit artist will show you the needle before putting it into the Tattoo Gun, and it's quite big, but I wouldn't worry when you see it though as hardly any of the needle goes into your body.

i just got this tattoo on my forearm (yesterday, in fact!). it's a one-off custom piece, designed for me by one of my favourite comic / graphic artists - the one, and only jim mahfood. pretty pleased with how it turned out, and i think it's suitably geeky for inclusion here!

I think if they showed me the needle I would be out of there in a second. That makes me feel nervous. My birthday is coming up though maybe I'll just get a really small one. Do they let you listen to music? I might just try and listen to the heaviest metal possible so I don't hear the tattoo gun.

Do they let you listen to music? I might just try and listen to the heaviest metal possible so I don't hear the tattoo gun. Don't hype yourself up and make it a negative experience in your mind before you even sit down to get the tattoo, that's almost guaranteeing you're not going to enjoy yourself. Just make sure you look around to find the best artist for what you want. You get what you paid for and it's going to be on your body forever, so don't be cheap. Browse every portfolio, website, and talk to every artist that piques your interest. Look to see if their outlines are consistent or tend to get blown out. Ask what kind of machine they use, rotary machines are newer and a little less painful, but not many artists use them as the shading can be a little more "peppery". Try and find someone who's actually interested in what you want as well, that also helps them put the passion into it. A lot of tattoo artists don't really like just tracing work that's already done, they prefer to draw out their own pieces, so that's also something you want to ask about. Don't worry about the pain, it's a mild annoyance which is a small trade for something that you hopefully are proud of having on your body. Those are my tips, some are probably common sense but that's okay, hopefully that helps.

My guy actually had his own music playing when I went in, so I sat there nodding along to a bit of Slash's Snakepit whilst he did my work - with regards to the needle he had to show me that he was taking it from a sealed package and wasn't dirty or previously used. Maybe when you ring to make the appointment ask if they can skip doing that bit, but if they have to do it, see if there's someone you can take in with you who will verify it for you. As previously mentioned though try and not psyche yourself out into believing it'll be a bad experience, it really doesn't hurt that much and its well worth it once you've got through it.

I was discussing it with my girlfriend, and that was exactly what I'm going to do. Have her go in and verify it. I'm going to start with something small. I'm more than likely going to get an outline of the Batman symbol on my calf (that seems to be the least painful place to get it). That way if I can take it, or enjoy the process, I can add on and/or cover it up. I'm looking at early next month I think. joestate, thanks... that actually really helped me out a lot. I'm not as terrified of going anymore.

Do be careful... Once you open this door, It's incredibly hard to close. At least for me!

Love this subject! Why get tattoos if you can't share and brag about them, eh? The only "nerdy" one I have right now is a reference to Tim Burton's poem "Voodoo Girl". For years, I've been planning my comic book tattoo, and finally had the piece drawn out, but found out I was pregnant the same month it was scheduled to be done. So, it's been put off until my now much tighter baby budget allows for it to be rescheduled, hopefully not much longer. It's Spider Jerusalem, from Transmetropolitan, commissioned by Ben Templesmith. Although its not on my skin yet, I'm very proud of the piece, it's my favorite artist and my favorite character.

I've thought about getting the Spider Jerusalem spider tattoo on my head, I have the left and right side of my head done but nothing on the top. I would definitely have done it already but I kind of want one more big piece to tie everything together.

I'm leaning towards something Cthulu like!

He was very happy to do Spider, as he's worked with Warren Ellis and has so much respect for that particular book.
