Just wondering what the general opinion and approach to these people have. Not creating them, but supporting them.
I kind of have a problem with them for 2 reasons. Firstly and least...ly is the fact that creators you like are releasing books you cannot buy. As someone from Australia, 99.99999% of the creators I love are overseas. So supporting a kickstarter type project is difficult because you're not just buying a book on a whim, I also have to fork out nearly twice that just in postage. I know they commonly bring them to conventions and so on, but again being overseas you may get 1 big name creator at any one Con along with a bunch of locals so its next to impossible to rely on that possibility. In any attempt I've made, it seems like any project that has already reached its pledge is only made available to those that pledged. More specifically I'm thinking about Lady Sabre by greg Rucka and Rock Burchett. Literally my favourite team in comics. But I cannot get a hold of this book without forking out $150 on ebay.
Secondly, and my biggest problem, is the reliability. I've supported one project through Pozible. The creators are both local but also well known overseas in relation to both comics and film. So they have a reputation. They announced a graphic novel between them and an artist due for release about 7 months later. Now I'm under the assumption that a kickstarter project is already underway before the funding. Writing and art are things that cost nothing for creators until they want to make money on it eg; print and sell. Thats why they are doing something creator owned. I assume most of the funding is to pay for phycsical production as well as the rewards. This project was announced early 2012 promised for October 2012 release and since then there has been nothing but vague updates apologizing but not being specific at all, although "Other projects" are to blame for the interuption. I understand other projects are important, but they more than surpassed their $35,000 pledge so they now have this money of all of ours and have given nothing. It seems super selfish to take all this money, not produce anything let alone a decent excuse, and then go on to other projects that see release 10 times over within that 2 year span.
Now because of this I will never do another kickstarter project ever again. If 2 people with recognizable names and reputations can't come through on something bought and paid for by their fans, how can you trust any?
