I'd definitely encourage folks to check out the series. As folks on the podcast have said, the series is full of surprises in terms of direction and offers a fresh take on the superhero origin story. Also, check out this video interview with Ming Doyle, www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9dh447cksM, as she discusses her art process on Mara and other series. Pretty informative!

It says it's £8.99 here.
Which is annoying!

I finished reading Mara today. Wow, that was one hell of a story for only 6 issues! Definitely the kind of comic that I wanted to read again as soon as I was done. It kind of reminded of Akira but with a more upbeat ending.

Damn! I wish I would have seen this earlier. It's back up to $12.99. Bummer. grimnperilous, if it's like Akira I might end up LOVING it. I should have taken advantage.

Ming Doyle's art in this book is amazing, I read the single issues and really want to get the trade collection now for the shelf.

Just picked up and read issue #1 today from a LCS. Hiding in a gigantic back issues bin for £1. On the hunt for #2 now...

I feel like the 'wow' of this series was lost on me. I enjoyed it, but what made it pop or resonate with Bobby and others on the site? Did I read it too fast?

Aaron, For me, I thought that the series found a way to be in many genres at once, and Brian Wood's mixture of larger societal issues with the smaller personal story really hit home. Ming Doyle's art was a perfect compliment, allowing the intimate moments their proper space to breathe. I'm also a sucker for a story that starts as one thing and takes that sudden turn, as Mara did. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I'm 30, have a job (and a wife and kid... wonder where the money goes?) and get a lot of my comics at the library. Awesome that your library has a copy!

It is a pretty good library, they have long runs of old and new stuff (the walking dead, wolverine and the x-men) but for ultimate spider-man they have all of them but 1, the first one.

finished this book yesterday, I was pretty happy with how it rounded out in the end. It felt a bit rushed to me. But that's understandable considering it wasn't an ongoing. It would have been nice to add and issue or two just to go into more detail with the brother and ingrid.
Overall I was very pleased and would recommend it for something refreshing.
