wjohnson22 I'm hoping they stay in the MECHA-INDIAN land for a little, they look badass!! Agreed! I definitely need another issue of Matteo Scalera's art depicting those amazing warrior suits. On a side note, this second issue reminded me a little of this sci-fi/alternate history book called The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. The basic premise is that the Black Plague kills off 99% of western Europe instead of 1/3rd, and thus western civilization never rises to become the predominate world power. The book depicts different eras in history after that and sees Buddhist, Middle Eastern, and Native American cultures become the predominate world powers. One of the stories discusses Native American soldiers using modern-sounding technology, but infused with aspects of their cultural tradition, somewhat like in Issue 2. Anyway, it's a great read and would highly recommend it.

I loved the first issue but this will be a series I trade wait for. Currently don't have the funds to get it weekly and it just barely doesnt make the cut on my list.

Yeah, I hear ya about having make a cut-off point! As with many series, I think it will read well in trade, but I am enjoying the cliffhangers at the end of each issue. For me, the series I'd collect if I had more funds would be Pretty Deadly, but I'm waiting on the trade for that.

I usually need to re read the previous issue in order to understand what's going on. So it's cool being able to read each issue like 3 times before I move on. I feel the same way about Black Science. I really don't think that it would be the same without the cliffhangers. But that's just me.

I'm not sure if its possibly because I love East of West and its a western also.

I read the first issue and all I could think was "... huh?" Then I gave it another shot and it quickly became one of my favorite series right now. I love westerns and dark fantasies so it's perfect for me. But I do understand why a lot of people aren't into it. The way she lays out the panels is really confusing and disorienting. I really have to absorb every page for a good couple minutes or else I won't understand what just happened at all.

Who else read issue #3? The art continues to be absolutely incredible. There are a lot of great looking books out there (Rocket Girl, Batman, The Wake, and many others), but the rich style here is hard to beat.
Although I loved the issue, I'm finding it hard to relate to most of the characters, especially Grant. Rick Remender seems to love flawed characters, but man this series does not paint any of the characters in a positive light. Anyone else have similar thoughts?

I read it!
I'm not a fan of the flashback portion of the story. I wish it concentrated on the present more.
I do agree I've yet to see much from Grant where I can back him. But, maybe, that's the point?

I agree about with you guys about the Grant stuff, he is not very likable so far, but hopefully Remender will give us a reason to root for him before this arc ends. I did like the flashback stuff as I felt it rounded out the back-story of how all of this stuff got started and how our band of mis-fits got to where their current predicament puts them. Based off that I would think we will see less flashbacks the next few issues save for maybe developing some of the other characters. I really want to see more of the present, not the past.

I need to be honest.
I read the first issue of Black Science and i hated it.
I didn't think we got a true introduction to who our characters are and general information of the world they live in.

That comes in the next few issues. The first one is meant to just introduce you briefly to the world and be thrown into the situation (just as they were). But pacino, I think that will come in the next issues. It would be really hard to build characters without the flashbacks in this current situation they find themselves in. I feel like after the first arc there will be a dramatic shift in the way the story is told.

Kudos for being honest! Personally, I loved the first issue, in particular the art and trying to wrap my mind around the crazy world presented in the story. Having said that, I can definitely see how the first issue could leave you pretty confused. Maybe once the first trade is out I'd encourage you to check that out and see if reading the first arc as one unit makes for a better reading experience. Regardless, I think it's important to acknowledge we can have different tastes. By the way, drocat, I checked our your tumblr page and those drawings from Khoa Ho are amazing! And your photos are pretty impressive too!

They turned me around on the flashbacks a bit. I think it was I didn't like ENDING on a flashback. They are most definitely needed, though. I'm looking forward to seeing Shawn get an issue. Looks like there's something going on between him and Pia, Grant's daughter.

I would only read this book again if someone lent it to me or if my library had the first trade.
