Hey Bob, do you have a favourite character that has faded into obscurity, either recently or a while ago?

Hi Uncle Bob!
I just want to know since you like Gail Simone's writing if you have ever read her run of DC's Secret Six?And if you have read it what are your thoughts about it? Even though i still haven't read everything i really enjoy it.

Simon,
One of my "faded favorites" has already made a nice comeback, and that is Dark Horse Comics' spectral avenger Ghost. I was a big fan of the Eric Luke original in the Nineties, so I'm thrilled that she's back, and in the capable hand of Ms. Kelly Sue DeConnick!
As to those still languishing, they're mostly on the DC side of the aisle. The Metal Men were my first DC books, and although they are due for a return in JLA, I'm fearful of a tonal shift, as I can't picture their light-hearted sci-fi adventures having a place in current continuity, and the same would hold true for the Bob Haney/Ramona Fradon creation Metamorpho the Element Man, and the original Doom Patrol. (Not to mention The Inferior Five!)
Marvel always seems to dredge up the forgotten heroes and heroines, for instance, it was great to see Dakota North hanging with Carol Danvers, and D.W. Griffith helping Luke Cage get his HQ up-and-running in the last Mighty Avengers! I'm sure that we'll never see the May Parker Spider-Girl again, which makes me very sad, but I was thrilled to read that James Robinson will be be bringing Alicia Masters back into Ben Grimm's life, so maybe I should wish a little harder for "Mayday's" return!

"D",
Sad to say that Ms. Simone's Secret Six has never been on my reading list; it is something I intend to try out one of these days, though!

I can definitely recommend it, its got really great villian characters like Deadshot, Bane, Ragdoll, Scandal Savage and Catman doing all sorts of dirty jobs.
Really good and funny writing by Simone(in my opinion).

Just an update for you, Bob.
I'm now up to issue #52 of Fantastic Four, ploughing along and loving it! I will read them ALL by the time I meet you, come hell or high water.

"D",
I've seen excerpts of Secret Six, and they've all made me smile somewhat cheekily, as the goings-on are so crazy, that I shouldn't find myself enjoying it! It seems the trades are mostly OOP, as DC tends to do with some of the more recent "Old 52", but I'm going to keep my eyes open!

Simon, Spider-Girl is one of my all-time favorite characters (#15 over-all, #5 female!), and it's sad that Marvel hasn't reprinted her adventures in an Archive edition or Omnibus volume, as the crazy-quilt way they're out now makes acquiring a run pretty difficult. One of my favorite pieces for Talking Comics is my essay on Spider-Girl, which I'll link here, in case you're interested: ( talkingcomicbooks.com/2013/08/26/the-amazing-spider-girl/ )

Hey Bob, Since you have a comixology account now, maybe you could try reading them there? I know you're not a huge fan of reading stuff online but it's better than trying to track down copies of the trades. Also I'm hoping to work on crocheting your captain marvel this week! - Kelly

Huw,
As we've discussed, one of the highlights of my Talking Comics experience has been the opportunity to hear that so many of our listeners and readers have discovered the wonder of the Fantastic Four due to my chatting it up! At issue #52 (the debut of the Black Panther!) you're in the middle of an amazing run of comics! Maybe we can get Steve to do a Fantastic Four edition of the Book Club on "The Galactus Trilogy", which is just ahead of you!

First off Bob welcome to the forums, and the modern technical age! We've all been waiting for you to appear, and straight to business to it seems. Keep it up! I don't think we'll see Mayday again either unfortunately, I really enjoyed her in all the chances they gave her, and all the other short lived MC2 characters. I just wanted to Chime in about Mayday, at the time I felt like the only person on Earth reading the DeFalco/MC2 books and titles that followed them having got sucked into the story through the What If? issue. Personally the tone and execution of the comic was important to me as I found the Spider-Man titles of the time a mess to read and a continuity nightmare to back track on. Spider-Girl & the supporting cast where well conceived and cleverly modified, as a younger reader it was a book that always stood out to me. I've found over the years that there is a lot of support for the character online - and its Marvel so never say never (I've read Quesada's a fan). So I wouldn't be at all surprised if she turns up somewhere down the line.

Kelly & "D",
Comixology does have the Secret Six, but at nearly cover price! More research by me is definitely in order!

Paul,
Thanks for the welcoming words!
When I first encountered May "Mayday" Parker in 1998, comics were still in the midst of the "Dark Ages", and she was a breath of fresh air, and quickly became the character I most wanted to read each month! It's good to hear Mr. Quesada is a fan, but with the new "Anya" version now in Avengers Assemble, I think our best hope is for an original graphic novel or a mini-series, rather than a regular in-continuity guest shot.
