So, what do we think? I'm putting my vote in for pretty darn good! It felt like a solid all around high-quality book. The art was serving to the story, the dialogue and story felt natural, or as natural as an Issue 1, can be, even the paper quality was superb. That's right digital readers, you're missing out on some high quality paper  All kidding aside, I loved this book enough that I'll probably buy it month to month instead of trade waiting. Also Scott Snyder's Essay at the end was chilling to the bone. |

I agree, the essay added to the creepiness and also gave nice insights into Snyder's creative process. If you read the new Sabrina #1 this week, you may notice some parallels regarding what happens when you anger a possessed tree...

I read this tonight. I thought it was good overall, but nothing in it made me want to pick up issue 2. Maybe I'm just not a fan of horror in comic book form. I love horror films but I think the genre is very hard to translate to pictures. A lone image can be very scary or creepy (as shown in the great artwork of this book), but I think the book lacked the element of surprise.
I did recently read the first trade of Locke and Key though, which I did find a lot more haunting.
I don't think this book has lived up to the hype just yet.

Excellent debut, though I have to say that as much as I enjoyed it (the art, the writing, the characterization, the world building, the visceral creepiness, all of it), it did help me put in perspective how I feel about the horror genre, in general, which is to say that it's really not a genre that tends to speak to me without some other element to it. I like horror-scifi, horror fantasy, philosophical horror, superhero horror, and such (though even those hybrid genres aren't exactly my top choices for entertainment), but this seems to be straight-up-now-tell-me horror, and the drive of such a story leaves me a little bit flat, even when it's crafted so skillfully. I want to know what happens to this family, and what happened -past tense-, but i'm not fascinated or absorbed by it; it's more morbid curiosity than anything (pun only mildly intended). So it's a trade-wait for me, from here out.
Also, did anyone else feel like this started out very, very, very, very similarly to Coffin Hill? I'm not suggesting that Snyder's been influenced by it, but I couldn't shake the similarities (not that that's at all a bad thing).

While I don't get scared or creep out much when I'm reading stuff...I must say this one was one of the few things that made me feel that way! And as many have been saying, Snyder's easy at the end added greatly to it.

Loved the book, and I am not a fan of horror stories at all. Solid story that blends and contrasts relatable people issues (both with Sailor and her parents) with a mysterious horror stalking the woods. I especially love Snyder's perspective and definition of what he thinks witches were...not the human enablers/worshippers that historically found themselves burned at the stake, but inhuman, primal, and intimately evil creatures.
Love Jock for the core mood and horror atmosphere. I feel he has a harder time with the casual, well-lit scenes, but the strength of Snyder's writing carries those effortlessly.

That letter of Steve in the back was awesome! I am very scared of horror movies, but comics are a little bit more abstract for me, so the issue was really good, but I didn't got goosbumps or so. I think that whole "it waited all the time for you to come back"-thing in that letter would have really really scared me, if it was part of the story, which it wasn't.
But I will keep reading the book anyway.

Great first issue. Read it last night. The motivation of the parents is pretty intriguing and the last couple of pages have stuck with me until this morning. I like Sailor as a main character and the Prelude was suitably creepy.
Hollingsworth killing it on colours again.
Thumbs up from me.

Wytches was great. What made it so great for me was the terror induced by the bully, not the wytches! My heart raced as I read the bully's dialogue -- that is true horror. It was so raw and cruel..and 100% believable.

I thought this was incredible. From the first issue i think this is going to be my favorite work of Snyder's. I thought Murphy and Hollingsworth was the greatest art team in comics right now, that was until i saw Jock and Hollingsworth. Also to think that Sail is only a few years younger than me and went though all that stuff with the bully, its just disturbing. anyway can't wait for issue 2

Brad Pitt's production company has optioned it for a movie. Snyder and Jock will be listed as executive producers on it. Nice pay for them for that, no doubt. Congrats.

Finally read this yesterday and I have to say as a fan of all things horror, I enjoyed it. Not quite as good as Nailbiter or Outcast but a very well written beginning. The added story from Scott struck a cord with me. I had woods next to my house and my neighbor and myself spent all our time in those spooky woods, playing like kids do, and trying to scare each other. Good start to what hopefully will be an awesome book

Wytches #2 out today what did you guys think? I really thought #1 was one of the best number ones in recent memory, so i wasn't surprised that #2 wasn't as good. That said it was still a great issue its dark and intriguing and the art is just incredible. I can't wait for more of this.

I had a good look at #2 earlier, and i'm not slamming it by saying it confirmed that I made the right call for me when I decided to wait on the series. It's just really, really not my genre. At all.
