It was a pretty big week for comics and my books of the week list is pretty much the entirety of my pull list!
Sabrina #1 - The folks at Archie Comics have found a niche well worth exploring with their supernatural takes on classic characters. Love the concept, art, and execution. It's at the top of my book of the week list for sure.
Batgirl #35 - Brenden, Cameron, and Babs do not disappoint with their fresh take on Barbara Gordon. I love everything from the bat-caper, the character interactions (surprise guest!), and the layouts. They did a lot in the 19 pages they were given.
Wytches #1 - Scott Snyder and Jock and Matt Hollingsworth. There was no doubt in my mind this was going to be a hit. I was genuinely scared while reading. Also the dad looks so much like Matt Fraction sometimes that it freaks me out.
Sex Criminals #8 - Hilarious, informative, and touching. Fraction and Zdarsky are bringing consistently amazing stories and it's no surprise that each issue that comes out becomes my favourite in the series.
Copperhead #2 - Certainly subtler than the breakout issue but just as amazing in terms of plot and character development. This is certainly one of my favourite new Image titles.

loved Wytches and have Sex Criminals but not read it yet but was pleasantly surprised that the book I enjoyed the most was Batman.
I'm sure I am in the minority but I really didn't enjoy Zero Year just found it fell very flat and seemed like they decided it would be 12issues and padded the story to fit. Issue 35 however was fantastic, pacey and packed with action which led us to a killer last page, I think this was Snyder & Capullo enjoying themselves and this issue delivered on every front, inks & colours then took it to a whole other level.
so yeah kinda likes it a wee bit...

Transformers vs G.I.Joe no.3 was amazing! This series is such a breath of fresh air, even with its retro style artwork. I've never read such a fast paced, action packed, adventurous comic in ages. I'd recommend this to anyone. It's one of those comics that has to be read to be believed! It can be laugh out loud funny one moment, then darkly violent the next (head explosions/melting people/robot autopsies!) Outstanding!

Like everyone else, Sex Criminals and Wytches. The Punisher was also really good, Edmondsons really hit his stride with the book. FBP was also superb, and is probably my favourite Vertigo ongoing.

So much good stuff out this week! I have to give it to Batgirl #35 because I adored the tone, the dialogue, the setting, the new costume, and Barbara, and I feel like this is going to be the start of a book I absolutely love reading every month. Sex Criminals #8 continues to be amazing, I LOL'd during the gyno visit. Sabrina #1 was a creepy and cool re-imagining of an old character which I'm definitely adding to my pull list. And Wytches #1 was horrifying but awesome.

Read four new books this week.
Wytches #1 - I'm not a huge horror fan but i am a fan of Snyder's writing and Jock's art, so decided to try it out, and i really liked it!The story was terrifying but also really interesting and left me wanting to read more, and there's just something about the art by Jock that i really love.So i'm at least on board for the next issue.
Batgirl #35 - As i said in the Batgirl thread i didn't think it was bad, but it sadly just isn't for me.
Copperhead #2 - Was pleasantly surprised by the first issue, and this one didn't dissapoint either.Great story that really pulls you in, cant wait to see where its going!
Birthright #1 - My book of the week! Wasnt planning on picking this one up, but i heard Bobby talk about it on the podcast and it sounded pretty interesting, and i liked Joshua Williamson's writing on Masks and Mobsters from Monkeybrain, so why not. The first thing this book reminded me of when i saw it was Locke and Key, and it definitely has some things in common with that series, if you ask me. The story just draws you in immediately, it has some great art, and even a nice little twist at the end. Not sure if its an ongoing or not, but its definitely gonna be on my pull list from now on!

I'm not even sure how to approach a Book of The Week post on a week as good as this! My entire stack was delightful. Captain Marvel was in a multitude of ways the issue i've been waiting to get from that series all year, and hopefully a sign that it's found its stride post-relaunch (after a more-than-stupendous #1 the rest of the first arc left me decidedly flat, but these last two have been so, soooo much better, and my excitement for this series is now finally back to where it was 6 months ago). Copperhead delivered a great second chapter. Absolutely loving this series so far. I enjoyed Wytches much more than I expected, considering my general apathy towards horror (no surprise, I suppose, given the talent behind it). Black Science also gets an "A", par for the course. The pace of this arc has been very different from the first volume, thusfar, but it hasn't arrested my affection for it in the slightest. And the weird "break" in this issue, leading into the second half of the book, was wholly unexpected and wild and crazy and I just love, love, love everything about this book. Continues to keep me very much on my toes. I'd give my Book of The Week to Gotham Academy, which i'm completely infatuated with and can't stop thinking about, but i'm a week late to the party on it. So let's just retroactively say it was my book of the week for last week, yeah? Top of the Stack, therefore, has to go to Rocky "If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it's a" Raccoon. I don't even . . I have no words to describe how much I adore this book. It's like it was written and drawn specifically for me. The onomatopoeia are fucking priceless, and that's not even the tip of the iceberg. I can't remember ever having this much fun reading a comic, and I look forward to many years of rereading this series, however long it ends up going, over and over and over again. "We don't retreat Face no defeat From the hordes to the Haurdians Come one, come all Bring 'em on! We're The Motherfucking Guardians!"

My issues this week were: Batman 35, Batgirl 35, Wytches 1, Sabrina 1.
I won't bury the lead here: Batman 35 was my book of the week. The art is more vibrant than ever, and the story is about to take us on a Morrison Level journey. This is the single greatest issue of Snyder's run.
Wytches 1, was solid opener, I really enjoyed it. I'll pick up an issue or two more to decide if I'm trade waiting or not.
Sabrina 1: I actually enjoyed a little more than Wytches, though I'm sensing a theme this week. Do they put out trades of the Archie books, or should this be a month to month only?
Batgirl 35: I wanted to like this issue... I really wanted to be a part of it... but as my wife put it "This was a character I could relate with and look up to, a character who I found to be both inspiring and an accurate representation of a similar time period of my life. I liked seeing her facing real problems, like getting a job, and being the socially awkward girl. Now that's all been stripped away and she feels like a 21 year old with all the bad qualities of a 21 year old." My wife and I both feel they've just really misrepresented the character constantly throughout the issue, between the Drinking, and the incident with Black Canary... it's not the Barbara I want.
I'm fine with a light Barbara, but I want a competent character that isn't stereotypically 21.

With this new take she seems like a slap-sticky meta-caricature of a 21 year old, and that's a sizable step down from the brilliant, experienced, mature-for-her-age, thoughtful, exceedingly-competent-at-pretty-much-everything Barbara in my head. To me, even when she was in high school she was more mature than this; i'd go so far as to count that as a major character trait of hers. The dialogue and general characterization would've taken me right out of it even if I hadn't already been so thrown by the art.

It's not the change of direction, because we do need more light fun books, but it feels they stripped away the pure essence of the character that I loved and respected... which is where I draw the line.

I'm gonna have to agree with the gents above. Very disappointed with this new direction. I've been reading about Barbara Gordon for about a decade she was one of my fav female DC characters. Oracle is one of my top 5 DC characters of all time but reading this is the first time i don't like Barbara Gordon....this is not the Barbara i want to read about. In other news Batman #35, Sabrina #1 and Wytches #1 were awesome.

Well, for the sake of variety:
Amazing Spider-Man #7. I admit, I only bought this book because it was “Guest Starring Ms. Marvel” and was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the post Superior Spider-Man supporting cast that Peter Parker has acquired. The dynamic between Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel was great and THE BEST line of the week goes to Spider-Man in the last panel of the main story.
Captain Marvel #8. I’m very much a dog person. Cats are fine so long as they are in someone else’s home and not taunting my dogs. I am, however, becoming a flerken fan and if they ever decide to do a Rocket/ Chewie the Flerken mini-series, I’ll have to buy that book. This book was just that much fun.
Death Vigil #4. Is no one reading this series? Each issue has been solid and this one is no different. We get more character development, a greater insight into relationships, more information on “the evil plan”, and a closer look at the villains who have more complicated motivations than expected (well, some of the villains). I think we’re going to find that while a sword may be great as a veil-ripper, it has nothing on the quill.
Batgirl #35. I’m conflicted. Too conflicted to discuss it here. Maybe in the Batgirl thread.
