Ok I make no secret of my utter distaste for Kevin Smith. I think the guy is basically a hack who got lucky with two or three movies (depending on tastes). So, I am very interested in seeing how his new movies do, especially when they get hyped up. Has anyone seen Tusk yet? What did you think?
So far Rotten Tomatoes is sitting at 41% and all the feedback I'm getting has been very negative.

I haven't yet, though I plan to (genre-wise, it's the sort of movie I typically Netflix-wait for). A few of my good friends saw it last night and they loved it.

I loved the way this movie was created(Smith came up with the idea on one of his podcasts)but even if it comes out here i will definitely NOT be watching it, sounds way too grotesque for me.

I love Kevin Smith and his films up to Clerks 2. Zack and Miri I don't count as a Smith movie, the plot of Red State doesn't interest me and I've heard nothing but bad things about Cop Out so didn't bother with those. I love his comics and I listen to Smodcast, Fat Man on Batman and Hollywood Babble On every week though. And my go to movies to have in the background while I bag and board my comics are Mallrats and Clerks 2. Don't know why. I just never get sick of them.
To have been able to hear the idea grow from a bunch of guys talking crap is something very new and cool to experience. I love horror but I hate gore and violence for the sake of violence. Smith has said this movie isn't gory as you'd expect so thats a relief. More suspense than anything. The only negative things I've really heard are that he basically uses this movie as an excuse to reference himself and his different projects. But if you like Kevin Smith for who he is, thats kind of what you want. Been excited for this movie since it was announced. Who here hasn't had a stupid conversation with a friend about a funny movie idea, and its just died there? He did the same thing but is lucky enough to have the connections to make the movie. Who wouldn't? Imagine the Talking Comics team made a movie? We would all see the hell out of it.
As a side note, I think saying he is "a hack who got lucky with two or three movies" is pretty spot on, but thats exactly why I love him. The only difference between him and anyone in this forum is he got lucky. But good on him. Speaking locally, there are SO many local artists and writers who put out their own comics and, opinion aside, are generally stories that have either been done to DEATH (deconstructed superheroes), are paper thin plotwise for the sake of good art, horrible art that gets in the way of good story or in jokes nobody else but them and their friends gets. But in saying that, I haven't written anything or released anything. Most people don't. But those other people pushed themselves or got lucky and now have something to put their name to. And Kevin Smith is that same guy. His voice is just loud enough for more people to hear.

I like Kevin Smith, although it's not aged well Clerks was amazing when it came out and really set the ball rolling for all the films I loved in the mid 90s, Empire Records, Dazed and Confused, Glory Daze and Smiths other films Mall Rats, Chasing Amy and Dogma. At the time I wasn't a huge Jay and Silent Bob strike back fan, but rewatching after listening to a lot of his podcasts I got a lot more of 'in jokes' and enjoyed more. Cop Out at his own admission was rubbish, and Jersey Girl wasn't great (although I don't think it's as bad as people make out). Clerks 2 was awesome, and I can't wait to see how he wraps up the Dante and Randal story in the 3rd film. I really liked Red State, even though it was completely different from his usual writing style. I'm not huge into the horror genre so I'll probably wait till Tusk gets released before watching it. I think if you don't Smith, you're not going to like the film as he's in the position where he just get's to make what he wants, for his fans. And I don't think you can knock him for that. Some of his comic writing can be a bit iffy. I loved his Daredevil story, quite a lot of his Green Arrow run was good, his Batman on the hand I didn't like at all.

Yeah.... So I just finished watching this movie. Don't ask why I did, it just felt like something I had to do.
I wish I didn't.
