I started seriously reading comics when Xavier was infected by the techno-organic virus by Strife pretending to be Cable. I didn’t know who wrote the stories, or the names of the artists. I didn’t care. I wanted to read more about these mutants and I started buying back issues to satiate my hunger. After the Phalanx convent cross over I started looking at names of artist. After Scott Lobdell left and the whole Onslaught thing was in the rearview mirror I started looking at writers. During all this time my interest in other artist and writers grew, but I always stayed faithful to the Uncanny X-Men/X-men books. Some artists or writers would come along and I would like them and then follow them to other titles. In 92 or so I followed characters. In 94 or so, I started following artists. In 98 or so I started following writers.
Which makes me wonder what do you follow, character, artist or writer? Which is more important to you and why?

I used to be just like that, i never used to look at who wrote or drew something. In fact, i only started doing that about two or three years ago, when i started reading again after a couple of years. And when i finally started to look at the creators i found out i read some pretty big stuff from some pretty big creators without even knowing it at the time. For example, i read almost all of Grant Morrison's New X-Men run when it came out twelve or thirteen years ago(they were translated to Dutch, but still)and i only found out he wrote that about two years ago.
Nowadays i mostly only follow creators, except when its a book with a character that i really like, in that case i will at least try it, no matter who writes or draws it. But if a writer that i love is writing something then i don't care what its about, i'm gonna read it, like Cyclops by Greg Rucka.I never cared about the character but its Rucka(for now), and he's one of those writers that i'm gonna follow even if he decides to write My Little Pony or something like that(no offense, bronies

I think for me the character comes first. There are certain characters that I just love so if they're in a new book, I'll read it even if I'm not familiar with the creative team. I'll also put up with less than stellar artwork *cough* Greg Land *cough* if I love the characters and the writing is good. I stuck with Fearless Defenders til the end and I've been sticking with Mighty Avengers even though the art isn't my favorite. And I'll probably pick up Spider-Woman even though I so wish it was a different artist After characters it's definitely writers. I'll give a book a try if I like the writer even if I'm not familiar or have much interest in the characters. I was curious about Inhumans when Matt Fraction was going to write it. Once that was no longer the case, I realized I didn't care about it as much. Right now I'm struggling with whether or not to stick with Cyclops once Greg Rucka is done.

Following characters was definitely where I started when it came to comics. I was able to spend hours at a time at the bookstore while my parents went shopping because Chapters always had a decent selection of graphic novels and manga. At the time, the Spider-Man, X-Men, and Daredevil movies were out so I'd try to read trades with those characters. Some of my favourite back then were Ultimate Daredevil and Ultimate Spider-Man. I find it hilarious now that I follow writers more than anything because Ultimate Daredevil was written by my absolute favourite comic book writer, Greg Rucka.
When it comes to the Big Two, it's a mixed bag. Female solo titles like Black Widow and Elektra got me with the art only because I wasn't as familiar with the writers. I might be part of a small percentage of people who love Cyclops but the idea of a space adventure with the younger version and Corsair didn't really interest me until Greg Rucka was tied to it. And while I won't read any Remender stuff in Superhero comics, his creator-owned books at Image are incredible. Brubaker can make absolutely detestable characters like in Criminal: Last of the Innocent, but the writing and art are so phenomenal and intriguing that it makes reading it and re-reading it a fascinating experience.
I guess writing and plot are the most important factors for me and the art needs to be able to visualize that properly. Characters are a great start when getting into superhero comics but that slowly becomes less and less important the more I get into creator-owned titles.
Nowadays, I mostly rely on the creative team and the reviews that come out when I decide to pick up a series.

When I first got into comics it was definitely characters. Since getting into it more, I definitely follow writers a lot more. Anything from Ellis, Rucka, Remender, Morrison, Gillen, Hickman, Moore and DeConnick are instant buys for me. I'm not hugely into the X-Men stuff and Cyclops is a character I've never really liked, but picked up the new series as Greg Rucka was writing it. Turns out to be awesome, and I'll stick with it once Rucka leaves the book. I think with the big 2, the backstory and mythos behind the book often draws me in. The whole Inhumans back story intrigued me, and I loved what happened in Infinity with Black Bolt and the terrigen mist and as a result started picking up the Inhuman book and would have done so regardless of the creative team.

I think its some combination. There are characters that you love and will read religiously, but under certain creators will fall off of (remender's cap and basically most of the previous run of deadpool). While certain creators may turn you on to a book. I read FF because I was interested in Hickman, I bought the first issue of moon Knight based on ellis. For me artists are much different, with very few exceptions (secret War, bendis) I do not buy books for the art, I guess because there's so much great art that almost any book I like the writing on will have good enough art to keep me. I would say the new thunderbolts run I DROPPED largely because I didn't like the art.

This is such an interesting topic I thought I would revive it.
For me there are a lot of variable that go into this. I'm a huge marvel guy, it's what I read as a kid. So if it's a marvel book I was and still am more invested in characters. Specifically X-men (iceman and wolverine, especially), spider-man and Captain America.
As my comic reading has evolved beyond just marvel, my attention to creators has influenced what and how I read.
Examples: 1. I will not read Hickman books month to month, I don't have the attention span and really think it takes away from his story telling. 2. I will read Amazing spider-man & x-men until they stop making it. Which with secret wars may be sooner than I think. 3. Books associated with creators such as Remender, BKV, Tocchini, S. Young, and Sejic will always get my money for at least an arc.
