That was a well written article, do you post articles like this often? Thank you! I'm trying to get in the habit now that a lot of people I know are getting into comics. It's a better method than throwing my graphic novel collection at them and yelling "READ THIS!"

Great article! I just followed you on tumblr, by the way. I'm slippedintherain on there. You can follow me if you enjoy seeing lots of pictures of Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston and Michael Fassbender along with some comics content. And now we follow each other on tumblr! Thanks for the follow and for reading the article!

It's a better method than throwing my graphic novel collection at them and yelling "READ THIS!" Fair enough. I'll give you a follow then, I look forward to seeing more articles.

I think regardless of having read comics, before any of us read comics we had SOME exposure to characters. And as repetetive and bias as some Top 10 or 25 lists can be, they are there for a reason. I started by picking up Superman: Red Son, Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: Year One and Daredevil: Man Without Fear. From there you find characters you love ad writers. I instantly took to Frank Miller and Jeph Loeb (Mark Millar is a bit hit or miss with me) and characters like Jim Gordon and Green Arrow instantly stood out for me. So follow the writers and characters. A big help for me was also looking at the recommended items in Amazon. Can't say how many times STILL after years of reading comics I'll search for a book I just read and then see what else there is recommended, then just read the reviews. Some of them can be your standard "This was good. The end" or they can come across as snobby comic-book-guy whine-fests. But sift through them and you'll find points that sound good to you. I found Planetary and Top 10 because of the recommended list.
And most importantly, don't listen to ANYBODY's negative comments. Whether it be anti-Marvel, anti-DC, ant-indie publishers, figure it out for yourself. All publishers have crap, but all of them have incredible stuff to beat that. Can't tell you how many times people have told me not to read certain DC books and those have become some of my favourites just because I wanted to know why they were so hated out of curiosity.
