Face front true believers. There is a new Thor in town. Marvel comics have decided to give the Thor mantel, well Mjolnir the super awesome hammer, to a new character. This is causing a huge buzz in the comic book industry as the current Thor will somehow mess up and be deemed unworthy of welding Mjolnir. If anyone reading this is reading Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender then perhaps you can see why Thor loses his ability to wield Mjolnir. Regardless of the reason the hammer is being passed to another character. A lot has been made of the issue that the new Thor will be a woman. This is huge for the comic book medium. Marvel has done a good job of presenting strong female characters; Storm, Rouge and Kitty of the X-Men, Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four and Captain Marvel to name a few. Unfortunately there are only a few more really strong female characters to name in the Marvel universe. Having a female character embody what is essentially a God is what is needed in the comic book industry. There needs to be more females in comics. Bringing in a female character, hopefully a strong character, to be Thor is a great example of how comics can address an issue that is somewhat ignored by the comics industry. In the two pictures that can be seen on the IGN article, link below, there is no indication that the new Thor is a “sexy, woman with ravenous appetites, or a one thought bimbo.” In fact the new Thor looks bad ass and sexy is the last thought that comes to mind. She looks strong, in control, and ready to deal with whatever is in her path. Applying sex or sexiness to women is not a bad thing as it is ridiculous to think that a woman cannot embrace concepts of sexiness and still remain true to herself, but there are other characteristics that can be applied to female characters that hopefully get explored with this new Thor. Another exciting factor is that this will be a legacy character. A Legacy character is a character that has had many or a few different people hold the mantel of the character. Marvel does not really do Legacy characters. Ant Man, Captain America and a second tier character White Tiger (if there are more please tell me in the comments) are the only ones that stick out. The inclusion of a new Thor character, hopefully one that stays around for a while, could breathe new life into the idea of Thor and in Marvel comics as they could do the legacy treatment with some of the other aging and stagnate characters. Over all, this new Thor is awesome news and her first appearance in the fall is eagerly awaited. How do you feel about it? www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/15/marvel-comics-announces-new-female-thor

How do you feel about it? www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/15/marvel-comics-announces-new-female-thor Captain Marvel, Nova and Hawkeye are a couple of other legacy characters I can think of. I'm mixed on this, I'm not really reading anything outside of Nova and Hawkeye(when it comes out), and one of the problems I have with changing to this new Thor is their attitude to new characters with old names, they just don't seem to last long. Captain America died, Bucky took up the mantle, then Cap came back what 18 months later? Ben Relly was Spider-Man for a year. Kate took up the name Hawkeye, while Clint was still Ronin, then he came back and retook the name after 2 years. These changes don't really last long enough to make a lot of change to the status quo. However I have heard good things about Jason Aaron's Thor run, and I really enjoyed Scalped so I'm sure he'll handle it with respect.

I was totally against it when I first heard the news but the guys on TC helped me to put it into perspective. It's probably only temporary. It's probably a tool to build a foundation for a new series with a strong female character. And as Captain Superior said "In Jason Aaron I trust".
I personally couldn't care less where and how it was announced.

I think announcing it on the view was actually a good move. They reached an entire different audience that would have never heard this news before. Even if only a handful of people cared its still a success. There's no such thing as bad publicity. I do think that its only temporary though and Thor will be back to being male probably by the time Avengers 2 rolls out.

I think my feelings about this can be summed up in one statement,"In Jason Aaron I trust". I second this opinion. Thor god of thunder has been awesome so I trust there is a great story to go with this mind bending news.

I can only speak for Captain America, but the difference with change is is that the book went up in quality when Bucky was Cap, he was a more interesting character at the time and then went onto his solo series which was better than what Brubaker was doing with Cap. And now they've made/will continue making a movie with that character. But as you said, as long as Jason Aaron treats the character with respect thats all that matters. In the end comics are comics because of crazy events and changes like this, but as long as the creator treats it will and its quality over quantity for the characters, it shouldn't be a problem.
