Anyone completely new to the X-Men might benefit from listening to the Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men Podcast. It's a great podcast, and it's only six episodes in, so it's pretty easy to catch up at this point. For what it's worth, the Lee/Kirby run on X-Men is currently sitting at number 42 on the War Rocket Ajax Every Story Ever list.

Another great episode. I really enjoyed the Jeff Parker interview Stephanie did. I have not read a ton of his work but I have read "Underground" and it is AMAZING. They have made the book free/PWYC on their website. I strongly encourage everyone to head over to undergroundthecomic.com/download-it-free/ and check it out (in CBZ or PDF form) and throw a few buck there way if you can.

Hello All, i've been listening to the podcast for some months and enjoyed it, but I had to register and come on to talk about Mount Rushmore. Surely this should be the creators who are giants that have moved the medium in new directions or consistently produced work of the highest standards?
Mount Rushmore must include Stan, Jack, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, and probably Will Eisner. Some people might argue for Robert Crumb, Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Darwyn Cooke for different reasons, but Id say they are not quite there. Some of the names mentioned on the podcasts were more like last years favourite writers than a Mount Rushmore. History matters! That is all. I thank you.

Jons, First off, let me extend the official "Welcome!" to the Forum! It's interesting that you raise the topic of "Comics' Mount Rushmore", as at the close of the show posting today, Bobby asks me if I have something to add, and this subject would have been it! Your Cranky Old Uncle Bob was absent from that episode (I did have a note from my Mother!), or your concerns would have been addressed. I think many people probably took that question to mean "select a personal Mount Rushmore", as opposed to looking at it in historical terms, so selections were made to that standard. To me, I believe as you do that we'd need to honor those whose lasting contributions forged the industry into what it is today, and for me, that means honoring the "founding fathers". Now, the original questioner posed it as "Not counting Stan Lee and Jack Kirby..." (which was more-than-likely to get me to talk about someone else!), but that's not going to happen here. Forced to pick just four, I would nominate Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, and Max Gaines, who invented the modern comic book in 1933, was the publisher of All-American Comics ( Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman ), and then founded EC (as "Educational Comics")--and he was the father of Bill Gaines of Tales from the Crypt and Mad! Being a rebel, I'd like to fudge this process a bit; I think of Stan & Jack as the greatest team in comics history, so thinking along those lines, my actual "Comics' Mount Rushmore" would look like this: Max GainesJerry Siegel & Joe Shuster (creators of Superman)Will EisnerStan Lee & Jack Kirby ('Nuff said!)An interesting experiment might be to try to select the "modern" Mount Rushmore, or perhaps the "creative teams" version!

Some of the names mentioned on the podcasts were more like last years favourite writers than a Mount Rushmore. History matters! That is all. I thank you. Of course history matters, but the question was personal Mt. Rushmore and to list those classic, amazing creators, (while absolutely justified) would have been disingenuous. Stan and Jack were not included (because the question dictated it) Moore was on my list (Miller should have been but I foolishly spaced) but I've never read any Will Eisner or Robert Crumb so the inclusion would have been purely for show. Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Mark Waid would be mine . But that is because they formed what I think of as comics. It's different for every one and no ones "Rushmore" is worth any less than any other. Yours is full of amazing people who forged our industry which makes it both awesome and historically accurate which I love!

Personal Mount Rushmores? This is all too postmodern for me!
We could probably do a poll and reach a consensus.
Bob is very literal with his founding fathers (but no Wally Wood?) but with real Mt Rushmore I remember some people wanted to chisel Reagan on in the 1980s, so on that basis youd have to include Moore and Miller I think on the comics one.
Mark Waid could get on if he nails the digital comics design. For now hes 'just' a consistently great writer of big 2 characters.

Whew ,Mount Rushmore, it's like picking your favorite child, and as with anything, personal preference plays a huge factor. One mans junk is another mans treasure kinda thing. And it's a fluid thing, ask me tomorrow and mine will probably be different. And who's to say someone new can't make a list, or an all time great? So my Mount Rushmore right now (and as per the question, no Lee & Kirby) is, (& let the berating begin, lol) Walt Simonson Garth Ennis Al Williamson Alex Toth
