Issue 129: Eisner Awards, Spoiler Rants, and Listener QuestionsDownload Directly From iTunesFeedburner LinkIt’s a brand-new Talking Comics or if we were part of Marvel, it would be the All-New Talking Comics podcast. But we’re not, so you know, just Talking Comics is fine. We head back to our roots and we pick just ONE Book of the Week so that we have time to get to as many listener questions as possible. It’s a little bit of a shorter show this week too, since Bobby has to be up super duper early this morning, but we hope the quality makes up for that. Books of the Week include: Lumberjanes #1 (by Noelle Stevenson, Brooke Allen and Grace Ellis), Nightcrawler #1 (by Chris Claremont and Todd Nauck), Shutter #1 (by Joe Keatinge and Leila Del Duca) and Iron Fist #1 (written and drawn by Kaare Andrews). Basically a lot of #1s, which are #1 in our hearts this week. D’awww… Our main topic though is YOU. And by that, I mean that we go through the listener questions on the forum and in our email and we answer as many as possible in our allotted amount of time (aka before Bobby’s bedtime). Which of our favourite characters would we kill off if we HAD to? WHO KNOWS?! But you’ll probably find out if you listen to the show. It's the best day of the week, new comic book and new TC podcast day!
So, tear yourself away from marketing for Whiskers (other cat foods are available) and have your say about everything the Talking Comics crew discuss, right here on the forum!
Annnnnnnnnnd… we say it on the show, but just in case you missed it, the Talking Comics crew on Twitter are: Bobby: @bobbyshortle Steve: @dead_anchoress Stephanie: @ hellocookieAnd Bob’s email is bobreyer@talkingcomicbooks.com

Gentle listeners,
Your Cranky Old Uncle Bob completely misread/misheard a question about permanently liquidating "fictional characters" from our Loyal Listener Logan during last night's recording, lumping it together in my head with the one he asked about "comic book characters" on the forum. I would have adjusted in a second go-round, but Bobby was under time pressures, and once I went down that road, no doubt Stephanie and Steve would have jumped in as well, so instead I'll do it here. If we're talking about my favorites among all fictional characters, Ben Grimm would still make the cut at #1, and certainly Captain America right behind, but I might have to slot Captain James Tiberius Kirk in at #3, but it would be a very close vote over Sue for the #3 spot, with Sherlock Holmes right there in the mix as well.
Regarding the "gun to the head" question about taking out a character, my answer would be that I would choose Capt. Kirk, as he "doesn't believe in the no-win scenario", and he'd figure out something to boldly do, and "turn death into a fighting chance for life"!
So there you go!

Instead of spoiling future stories like Forever Evil and with Dick Grayson why don't they announce it in the end of a book. E.G. Continued in Grayson#1 on sale in July.

That "three favorite characters" question really got the wheels turning--I had to boil down my three favorite characters in all of fiction, no simple feat! I eventually did come to the triumvirate of Spider-Man, Garrus Vakarian (of Mass Effect), and Michael Corleone (of the Godfather), with the incomparable Atticus Finch placing a close fourth. I suppose that I'd have to eliminate Michael from all of existence, considering his less-than perfect moral standing.

I just listened to last week's podcast and this week's podcast today after being out of town (and out of the country) last week. The Cap 2 discussion was great, and I wanted to say thanks again for doing the Cap history lesson podcast prior to the movie, because I think it definitely added to my enjoyment of the film. The three favorite fictional characters question is so tough, what a horrible thing to ask! I suppose I'd have to go with the Doctor, Loki (the comics/MCU version, not the mythological figure, of course), and Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities. Given that the Doctor can regenerate and Sydney Carton's already dead, I guess it would have to be Loki, which is a safe bet for me since I know he can come back from the dead anyway.

Also in June why not have a children in comics special as Tiny Titans is coming out?

My three favourite fictional characters are:
Batman Spider-Man Tyrion Lannister
I'd have to agree with Bobby and Steve and say Batman would be killed off. Someone else would adopt the mantle and carry the Batman name on. But I'd have to kill him off on that proviso as I'd have a sad if there was no Batman.

Re. the Eisner nominations, I'd like to add another recommendation for Nowhere Men. It is indeed a very dense read, but thoroughly worthwhile and one of the most enjoyable things I read in the last year. I got it when the collected Vol. 1 came out on Comixology (currently reduced to $4.99 btw.) and I'm not sure I'd have got as much out of it if I'd read one issue at a time, but I was left desperate for more at the end of it which is always a good sign.

Great episode, the Dick Grayson spoilers didnt really affect me too much since I havent been reading Forever Evil but I dont agree with the methods of DC and Marvel where they throw thing like this out before its even done.
My three favorite characters would be
Obi-Wan Kenobi Gandalf Magneto
I would have to sacrifice Obi-Wan since technically he would still have methods of being around.

Good one as usual guys, great to hear Stephanie again.
As for my three favourite characters, from the top of my head they are Walter White, Batman and Spider-Man. Think i'll have to go with Mr. White because those other two are heroes and try to make the world a better place while I think Walt only makes it a worse place with his blue meth.

Correction to the top thread is that it is Todd Nauck on art for Nightcrawler. Also based on the podcast question on pronunciation of his name it is "knock."
Great artist and fun to follow on Twitter during convention season as he does a sketch retweet contest at every show.

Maybe Andrew is Todd Nauck's less famous little brother. Either way it was another good show and glad people dug Nightcrawler. I thought Nauck's take on the Bamfs looked like living plushie Nightcrawlers.

Another good show guys (& gals), thanks for answering my question. That did turn into a good discussion and I'm glad I asked the question. A little disclaimer, when I got back into comics in the early 90s, I was a "collector", I bought all the #1s, all the foil variants (thanks Chaos), and everything I could get my hands on ( except Valiant Lol). Sometime after that I realized how stupid that was and decided that I would not buy anything NEW that I did not read. So NOW I live in both worlds, I read what I buy new, I still collect (almost done with an entire Journey Into Mystery/Thor run which will be my crowning achievement, and then I'm going to start on finishing a Weird War Tales run / gotta 8.5-9.0 #1 Bob ), so I can and know how to bridge the two worlds. As for my fictional characters, my 3 would be Thor, Drizzt Do'Urden (from R.A. Salvatore's Dark Elf books) and Han Solo. Even though I'm pretty sure Drizzt would sacrifice himself, I would throw Han to the wolves lol.

Sammie, It was the perfect sort of question that isn't really "answerable" for everyone at once, but you gave us one where hopefully we could provide some food for thought for those struggling as so many of us have done on this very subject. Gotta love a Joe Kubert cover!! Nicely done!
