With the shop being so far away have you considered reading comics digitally? As for Marvel books you're coming in at the perfect time, damn near all of the books are either rebooting or getting a new jumping on point. Some of them aren't great jumping on points, but what can you do. I was disappointed with Hickman's Avengers "new #1" as it was the first issue I read and was pretty lost throughout. But Black Widow is only on issue #3, as is The Punisher, Loki is on #2, Moon Knight #1 just came out (SO GOOD!), Fantastic Four #1 was pretty good. Silver Surfer #1, Iron Patriot #1, along with several Avengers and X-Men books are starting up this month. As for April we have a new Amazing Spider-Man #1, Iron Fist #1, Doop #1, Mark Waid's Hulk is getting a new #1, Nightcrawler #1, All-New Ultimates #1, Ultimate FF #1, Ultimate Spider-Man, Elektra #1, and Inhuman #1. The next 2 months are going to be crazy with all the new #1s and jumping on points. I think the next Iron Man is a jumping on point as well. I have read some digitally but I think the whole thing about comics is the feeling. I know Im silly but yeah. But I will probably read some digitally eventually. Thanks! It's not silly. I always prefer a physical copy. I don't read something digitally unless it was something I really wanted and my LCS was solid out, and even then I will still put an order in for an actual copy. hellocookie is the digital czar 'round these parts

Oh, thank you! I will get Hawkeye vol. 1 when I find a shop that dosent take more money for shipping that the actual comic.. Im very happy that you explained where to start with Avengers, there is alot of different ones out there. I found on on a website called Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble #1 SYU. Is that the on I should start with or am I just being slow now.. And this will be alot of money. I will certainly use Wikipedia and you will see me here on the forum again! Thanks again! Hey man, go to marvel.com/redeem and use the code TMAUB51L2HNH That'll get you started with Avengers, it's the first Volume of Jonathan Hickman's run (you'll also get issue 24 with it but obviously read that once you've read everything else). Enjoy! Omg huw! Thank you so much! How can I ever repay you for this?! Im so happy! Thanks!

(just kidding, I went back and read the thread) ComiXology is amazing and it's such a great way to digitally buy and organize comics. It's my life-saver. Plus if I forget about any comics coming out, I can subscribe to a series and it just automatically downloads when each issue is available. As for actual books to read, I think everyone has given some excellent suggestions so far. -Journey Into Mystery (a big yes) -Young Avengers (another big yes from what I've read) -Black Widow (SO GOOD) -Loki: Agent of Asgard (REALLY interesting read) If you like Avengers stuff, you might like Kelly Sue DeConnick's run on Avengers Assemble, her Captain Marvel stuff too and maybe check out Brian K. Vaughn's work on the series Runaways, which is on a LONG hiatus. Hope that helps!

Hawkeye Vol. 1 is a great read, and a great start. It's not bogged down by continuity, and is just plain fun. Vol. 2 is out also. As for Avengers titles, I'd recommend the series Avengers Assemble. Issues #1-#8 feature the same team as the movie and are written by Brian Michael Bendis. BUT stick around after those issues, because Kelly Sue DeConnick takes over and starts featuring some excellent Avengers that we have yet to see on film, such as Captain Marvel and Spider-woman. Pretty much everything is collected into hardcover volumes right now. The first one is simply titled "Avengers Assemble", the second is "Avengers Assemble: Science Bros" and the third is "Avengers Assemble: The Enemy Within" which also features a few issues of "Captain Marvel" that crossover with the story. Jonathan Hickman's "Avengers" is pretty dense, but I absolutely love it. Just dive in headfirst, and don't worry if you don't "get it" at first. I'd recommend reading Hickman's "New Avengers" alongside it. These are more conceptual science fiction stories than your run-of-the-mill super hero stories, so if you're into that, you'll probably enjoy it! And just like courtneyk said, embrace Wikipedia! These characters have long, rich, histories, and it's impossible to know/remember everything, even if they're your favorite characters! If a character that you're interested in pops up in a title you're reading (ie: Hyperion, who I knew nothing about, appears in Hickman's Avengers), just look them up on Wikipedia and refresh yourself on their history! Of course, you are always more than welcome to ask questions here on the forums too! Welcome aboard! You're in for a hell of a ride! Oh, thank you! I will get Hawkeye vol. 1 when I find a shop that dosent take more money for shipping that the actual comic.. I think Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble #1 SYU is the companion series to the cartoon TV series, which I haven't read. Here's the amazon link to the first volume of the series I'm talking about: www.amazon.com/Avengers-Assemble-Brian-Michael-Bendis/dp/078516328X/ref=sr_1_4s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1394207169&sr=1-4&keywords=avengers+assembleThey have the same name, which is confusing, I know!

Hello. Im new at all this with comics and its really a science! Is there a chance that maybe some of you guys would want to help me out? Im a marvel fan but I havent read any comics... I know Im a shame... But I would really love to! It just, its like a 1000 different ones of the same comic and I dont want to start in the middle and yeah.. Help? Hello "mini", and a belated welcome to our Forum!
I had to wait a bit, as I didn't want to interrupt whilst your thread was quickly filling up!! Our family of friends really took to your request with amazing skill...and good taste!! You have some fabulous recommendations there, and as has been pointed out, with the "All-New Marvel Now!" just beginning, and the "old" one not to far in the past either, you're in a good position to be fairly current in a hurry!
If you've heard me ramble on the show, I'm a big fan of Marvel's deep history, but for a new reader, attempting to catch up to 75 years of it is a large task! What might help are the trade paperbacks entitled "Marvel Firsts", which are broken down by decades and reprint the debuts of the major characters.
Another method that might be an even better way to get caught up on continuity is through the 25-issue series Marvel Saga, which re-capped the first quarter-century of the Marvel Universe in easily digestible bites. With any luck at all, it might be on the Marvel app!
Have a great time here on the Forums, and please, never hesitate to ask a question, you'll always find a helpful response...and probably a bunch of them!

Bob, thanks for mentioning those resources - I didn't know about those books! I'll see if they're up on Marvel Unlimited now that I have my shiny new one month subscription with the Thor 2 DVD.

Courtney,
Even though Marvel Saga came out over 25 years ago, since Marvel as a company embraces their continuity, it all still "counts", and that mini would be a great way to get up to speed; even better, the way the story is told will help you to link the various series together!
Fingers crossed it's on the app!

Along with Hawkeye, another great similar type Book is superior foes of spiderman. It's quirky, witty and crazy amount of fun. It's less than 10 issues in so it's easy to catch up!

A quick thought on recommendations for new readers: I think it's important to be specific because with all the different volumes and renumberings. Just saying something like "check out Black Widow" could end up sending someone down a confusing road of collections and minis of varying quality. It confuses me sometimes, and I've been into comics for twenty plus years.
Just wanted to throw that in. I think you guys are giving great recommendations and she'll definitely find the kinds of stories that she's looking for.

I would check out all of Matt Fraction's Hawkeye run as well as all of Kelly Sue DeConnick's Captain Marvel. They're both fantastic!
