Anyone who listens to the Talking Comics podcast, or follows me on Twitter, knows that music is and always will be my first love.
So I thought that every now and again I would share some of my favorite music with you ... and maybe get a great conversation going in the process.
What you'll find here are some tunes that at any given time can be heard blasting from my speakers.
Rocket Man (Elton John Cover) Maynard James Keenan & The Flaming Lips Steven Drozd
Sharon Van Etten - Give Out (Live on 89.3 The Current)
Failure - Wet Gravity

Great tracks, Mr Steve. I can see you're a fan of the dustier corners of Alternative where the real gems can be found. That Maynard/Drozd Rocket Man track is fantastic. Maynard's voice is always a treat to whatever he lends it to, but it's Drozd I find to be a constant source of great music. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan as they're a band who are always moving forward, and rarely miss the mark in what they're trying to achieve. Drozd in particular is a major player in the constantly evolving textures of the band. Here's a track off of one of their more recent works that blends so many distorted sounds and crystal clear tones as to be unfathomable from a producer's viewpoint. Beautiful harmonies on that Sharon Van Etten track. Haven't heard her work before so thank you for that. My favourite harmonies can be found in the catalogue of Tegan and Sara. As you included a cover before, here is a version of The Boss' 'Dancing In The Dark' that the twins knock out of the park and reimagine as a wistful, aching, number. Finally I include a psychedelic-indie number from Australia's newest gem, Courtney Barnett, which has been on constant rotation in my playlists. I look forward to hearing more on this thread

I look forward to hearing more on this thread Ah Lenny, I knew that you'd be finding your way to this thread sooner or later. Good man! Ha ha ha! Yes indeed, The Flaming Lips are amazing! I had the chance to catch them when they headlined All Tomorrow's Parties New York back in 2009. Check out the lineup on that beast of a festival, it was pure madness: FRIDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER THE JESUS LIZARD IRON & WINE PANDA BEAR (MOVED FROM SATURDAY) THE FEELIES - Performing Crazy Rhythms DIRTY THREE - Performing Ocean Songs SUICIDE - Performing Suicide (1st LP) THE DRONES - Performing Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By FRIDAY COMEDY STAGE - CURATED BY DAVID CROSS DAVID CROSS EUGENE MIRMAN JON BENJAMIN & JON GLASER (THE FUGGEDABUDDIES) DERRICK BROWN AND THE NAVY GRAVY SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER - CURATED BY ATP ANIMAL COLLECTIVE SUFJAN STEVENS - Performing Seven Swans DEERHUNTER MELVINS BOSS HOG EL-P DEAD MEADOW AKRON/FAMILY SLEEPY SUN BLACK DICE ANTIPOP CONSORTIUM AUTOLUX ATLAS SOUND SHELLAC CIRCULATORY SYSTEM BRIDEZILLA GROUPER SUNDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER - CURATED BY THE FLAMING LIPS THE FLAMING LIPS BOREDOMS - Performing 9 drummer BOADRUM NO AGE WITH BOB MOULD - Performing Hüsker Dü CARIBOU VIBRATION ENSEMBLE DEERHOOF WITH MARTHA COLBURN CRYSTAL CASTLES SUPER FURRY ANIMALS BORIS - Performing Feedbacker THE LOW LOWS ONEIDA PRESENTS THE OCROPOLIS BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW MENOMENA HOPEWELL BIRDS OF AVALON Also... I've got stories, man! I've never actually heard very much from Tegan and Sarah. I tried giving their newest album a listen but found that I wasn't able to make it very far. Though I do like the cover you posted quite a bit, so perhaps it's time to revisit their work. I am however really digging that Courtney Barnett track quite a lot. It's got a bit of 70s flavor to it and gives off a pretty rockin and "fancy free" vibe. Me likes! I shall raise your videos with some more of picks of my own, sir! Akron/Family - Ed is a Portal The Jesus Lizard - More Beautiful Than BarbieOneida-Up With People

ATP is always fantastic, last one I went to was curated by the Melvins and Mike Patton. Fantomas played all of Directors cut, Mastodon, Isis, The Locust, The Damned, Joe Lally from Fugazi, Squarepusher, The Meatpuppets, Kool Keith and Martina Topley-Bird. Such an awesome line up, was absolutely broken after, lol. I've got tickets for there Jabberwocky event in London this year. Looking forward to Electric Wizard and Kode 9.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!! I am so jealous that you get to attend so many of their events while living in the UK! They really know how to curate a festival that's tailored to fans who love honest to God rock n roll and then some.

deadanchoress The Flaming Lips curated ATP looked like an amazing weekend. Favourites of mine from there being The Jesus Lizard (included in your videos... good man), Eugene Mirman, Melvins, Dead Meadow, Sleepy Sun, Autolux, Shellac, The Flaming Lips, Bob Mould, Deerhoof, Crystal Castles, Super Furry Animals, Boris, and Oneida. Feel free to share those stories from your 5 year experience. Bet you've seen some awesome bands over the years. On Tegan and Sara: their sound has evolved from the first folk-based album. I love the last album even though I fully understand it isn't a great representation to someone just discovering them. To me, their sound has been moving towards a big synth-pop album for a few albums now and as long as they've earned it and they've written and played everything themselves; they can do as they please hehe Few acts in their position do as much for LGBT rights and make great pop. I love great pop, particularly pop written and performed by the acts themselves. Love the Akron/Family track as well as the others but I haven't heard of them before. I'll be checking more out. thephantomwelshman Huge Melvins and Mike Patton fan so I would've loved that line-up but have never found my way to an ATP event. Closest I've gotten was The Flaming Lips playing The Soft Bulletin w/ Dinosaur Jr (playing Bug), and Deerhoof (playing Milkman). I caught Mike Patton at Reading with Rahzel many moons ago and saw the first Peeping Tom live show in Belgium. Without further ado... more tracks... Akron/Family reminded me of the excellent Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. Good strutting music... Speaking of strutting music, I present the previously mentioned Shellac and the track I'd open a 70's Cop Show with... And finally, as Mr Steve mentioned digging the 70's vibe from the Courtney Barnett track I thought I'd take us back to 1973 and the legend that is Betty Davis for a slice of funk to top off the strutting compilation... Enjoy the walk...

They were amazing, the harmonies were incredible but their sound was what blew me away. It was like you said, synth-pop but with big bass and drums. Simply gave me the spinal chills!!

This is a nice song with great harmonies featuring Rachel Yamagata and Ray Lamontagne. youtu.be/d38g0RDLfAULove this track too by Braund Reynolds. youtu.be/THay8BuMFdsAnd if you only listen to one of these links and love a good instrumental piece like me check out John Butler from the John Butler trio performing 'Ocean'. I get neck ache from the amount of times the hairs stand up through this. youtu.be/jdYJf_ybyVo

About 5 years ago the John Butler Trio came to town and I fell hard for them. He played 'Ocean' too whilst the guys took a break. Fantastic. I play 'Zebra' almost daily whilst I'm shaving.

Heh. This thread is steadily becoming a great place to listen to some great music. I wish that I had time to respond to you all individually this afternoon but, ya know, deadlines! Bah!
It's funny, we have a local rock outfit named Zebra and I already like the video Blencs posted a hell of a lot more than I like them. Ha ha ha! I once went to the guitarists house to jam with my then guitarist. He really dug our sound but we never followed up with him about working together in any capacity. Oh well. Time marches on.
Anyway, I thought I'd add some tunes to the thread for this weekend. Enjoy!
Anywhere - Pyramid Mirrors
Beach House - Wild - Bloom
Bjork - Mutual Core - Biophilia
Note: Bjork is my second favorite musical artist ever. If it's been a while since you've heard her music I invite you to listen and enjoy the above video. To be honest, I'm going to stop myself from talking about her now, because if I don't I'm libel to go on and on about how much joy she's brought to my life.
Right on.

This gives me shivers with every listen. Conner Obersts voice is just so honest and raw. Nothing fancy but powerful all the same. Supreme lyrics. Bright Eyes, Lua youtu.be/5aZh261KZWI

While I'm at it, I discovered this song when it played at the end of an episode of supernatural and I thought wow that was cool. Now it's one of my go to chill out tunes. This is a great vid from 72 and if you can spot anyone on stage that isn't mashed out of their faces then you have done well!! Also at the end there is the greatest example of just what can be achieved with a tambourine in the right stoned hands!. I confess to being in love with this era of music at the minute, that pure stoner melodic bluesy rock just connects with me :-) Traffic, Dear Mr Fantasy. youtu.be/pSQ1akE2CcM

I love the atmosphere it inspires, how it just chills you the $%&* out. Allman Brothers - Whipping Post (Live)

Allman Brothers - Whipping Post (Live)I keep meaning to delve into the Allman brothers back catalogue as I love Government Mule with Warren Haynes and The Dereck Trucks/Tedeschi Trucks band with Dereck Trucks who both play in the Allman Brothers. Should be a No-brainer??!!!
