I believe a superhero movie will never be considered serious enough by the members of the academy for true consideration. Furthermore, if TDK didn't even get a nomination for best picture, I find it difficult to believe another superhero movie could actually win.

It really depends on the film but I don't really see it happening any time soon. Superhero films tend to be made as blockbusters with a ton of entertainment value and action, not as potential Oscar bait.

Super Heros and Sci-fi will never win a Best Picture award, a very big maybe would be Best Adapted Screenplay. I think LOTR is the closest anything of the sort will ever win Best Picture.

I dont ever see a super hero film ever getting any kind of Oscar, Golden Globe, etc. type of recognition sadly.

Although it wasn't for Best Picture, The Dark Knight was nominated for 8 Academy Awards. Heath Ledger won the Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight so it has happened in a way.
That kind of tone (or perhaps something a bit naval-gazy like Ang Lee's 'Hulk') is the only type of film likely to get that kind of attention though.

It may seem a bit morbid, but id Ledger hadn't died he wouldn't have won. May not have even been nominated.

Either way, the performance totally justified the award. Other than Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt I didn't think there was a performance that equalled Ledger's that year.

I love Heath and his portrayal of the Joker but I definitely agree that had he not passed he most likely would not have won that Oscar.
