So as a kid I was really into comics. I started to collect around the age of 9 or 10. As soon as I could shovel snow and mow lawns to get extra money. When I was 18 I sold all my comics for a bus ticket to Phoenix, AZ and a couple months rent on a apartment. Being from Ohio and living in the snow belt it was a sacrifice I was willing to make and loved it. I'm now 40 and wanting to start collecting again. I need some ideas of where to start. I would rather not start in the middle of a series that has 100 books already. I will go back a year or so to get caught up though. Mind you that my favorite comics as a kid were Green Arrow, Silver Surfer, and of coarse Wolverine. But now I would like to be open to anything, not just superheros. Ill try any comic as long as it's not Manga. As far as books go I love to read sifi fantasy, epic fantasy like LOTR and stuff with dragons, also Horror suspense like Clive Barker and King. Well that's about it. I hope this gives you some idea of what I might like, I'm open to suggestions.

Hmm...If you really love Green Arrow, the current Jeff Lemire arc (which started with issue #17) has been fantastic and is a perfect jumping on point for any fan of the Emerald Archer. Lemire's first volume will be released March 25th and collects the series up till issue #24. #25 and onward is a new arc that's currently going (and is a suitable, if not perfect jumping on point) but you'd definitely enjoy it if you love Green Arrow. Wolverine also just started up a new ongoing a few weeks back and is a great jumping on point for new readers. The only thing worth noting is he no longer has healing powers but otherwise that's all you really need to know. Silver Surfer has a new series coming out next month. Seems like it will be pretty good. In terms of other books I could recommend, Saga is a really great comic. It just ended its third arc not that long ago and the first two volumes are on sale now (with the 3rd coming out April 1st). Same goes for Fatale, East of West, Revival and Rat Queens. The first 3 all have trades out that can get you easily caught up and the last one (which is a DnD/LotR-esque fantasy-comedy) only has 4 issues out. I know everyone else who comments here will probably have other great ideas, these are just some I have. Hope it helps

Seconding the Saga recommendation! I caught up with it through the trades and gobbled it up, and now I'm bereft that there's a six month wait for the next issue.
I'm also new to comics, so I can just tell you what I'm reading right now and enjoying: The Unwritten, which I'm catching up on via the trades and which just came out with issue 1 of The Unwritten: Apocalypse recently (also if you've never read Mike Carey's Lucifer I highly recommend it); Ms. Marvel, which had an amazing first issue that I was just listening to the podcast team review at lunch today; Loki: Agent of Asgard, a book for which I am a huge cheerleader (and I also recommend going back and reading Kieron Gillen's Journey into Mystery and Young Avengers, though you don't have to in order to understand the comic); Black Widow; and Hawkeye, which I just started reading via recommendation here and was recently on sale on Comixology. It might still be on sale, I'm not sure.

I also agree with Saga, also if you're into horror, try Walking Dead, and for fantasy, try to find Dynamite's comic adaptions of R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books. If you haven't read any of his books either, pick them up. To me, those are the best fantasy novels ever written (yep even better than Tolkien). Wolverine is what Wolverine is, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Jason Aaron's run on Wolverine & the Xmen is pretty good.

In addition to Saga, Revival, and Fatale, I'd recommend checking out Ten Grand from Image. I think Issue #7 recently came out, and the first trade is available. It has a Hellblazer vibe to it, and features demons, the afterlife, back to regular life again, the afterlife, you get the picture. There is an artist change after Issue #5 that's a little jarring, but once you get used to the new art, it's also great.

It's a great series, despite the odd artistic change, and a phenomenal horror comic.

Lazarus, Manifest Destiny, and Zero. All early into runs, and though they don't sell too high (probably under 10k each) monthly, I think they will be around awhile.

It's superb and what he's built up so far has been incredible. Other suggestions based on what you said: -Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez -Aquaman by Geoff Johns (start with the DC New 52 stuff... I never thought I'd be an Aquaman fan but Johns does an AMAZING job with the character) And I'll try to think of a few more for you!
