I'm a new listener so you might have covered this before, but I am so curious about your username! Is it a reference to Julian of Norwich? I realize it is probably not a reference to Julian of Norwich. I did get to see her anchorite cell when I was in Norwich, however. I also bought a greeting card in the gift shop with a donkey on it made by a hermit. And that's my story about a dead anchoress.

I also bought a greeting card in the gift shop with a donkey on it made by a hermit. And that's my story about a dead anchoress. Heh. Actually, this question requires a bit of a lengthy explanation. The short answer is that Dead Anchoress was a pen name that I took up during my first year of college. At the time, I found it to be thought provoking and just skirting the edge of ridiculous. I liked that it had a bit of mystery behind it as well. Looking back, I suppose I liked the name because, for a brief time, I was fascinated by the very idea of an anchorite. Punishing someone due to a personal choice or belief is a practice that I would never subscribe to, and in some way, I figured that if I wrote some great stories under that name that I might infuse something positive into its meaning. I also spent a lot of time hanging out beneath the library stairwell, so, yeah. Ha ha ha!

Ha, thanks for the explanation! I agree, anchorites are fascinating. I didn't know much about them until I visited my friend in Norwich and she took me to the Julian of Norwich site. I couldn't quite wrap my head around the notion that she actually chose to be walled up and isolated for the rest of her life. Her story is quite interesting if you've never read up on her.
Did you ever publish anything under that name?

Unfortunately, I have not. The course only lasted one semester which did not allow for much time to attach the name to anything worthy of mass distribution. After the class wrapped, it more or less became one of the few online monikers that I've hidden behind throughout the years. I'm hoping that if I'm published further down the road that I'll have the good sense to use my real and full name. Ha ha ha!

I totally had to share this with you Steve. I went into one of my smaller LCS's and heard movie music playing very quietly on the 1st and 2nd floors. I asked the owner about it who said that its just a custom Pandora station. So the moment I got in my car I searched Pandora for movie scores and there is a whole station of selections from movies score soundtracks. It was going to the Imperial Death March from Empire Strikes back to the main theme from Pirates to the Carribean to music from The Dark Knight. I was like AWESOME! So yeah here I am in lovely NY state driving in this snow and cold weather but little do the other drivers on the road know that there is some awesome epicness occurring in my car as I totally jam out hahaha. Thought you would like that story and check out the station (if you havent already, because its great) *cue the signature Steve YEAHHHHHH*

Yeah, I totally have been known to go off into my own world when listening to tunes in the car. Back in the day I used to be the lead singer for a couple of musical projects and have since never quite gotten away from rocking out when I feel the urge. Thankfully, I'm an album man - so, normally, I just throw on an album for that particular ride and jam to it the whole way through. Lately, I haven't been able to stop listening to the following albums: Failure - Fantastic Planet Warpaint - Warpaint KoRn - The Paradigm Shift - SO much fun to sing! I'm still a major fan of this band. Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual Sleepy Sun - Maui Tears And ... because they never leave my stereo for more than a day ... Tool. It doesn't matter which album. That's my band. Enjoy yourself and please be safe out there!

Hi Steve,
Have you heard of a Comic called, Escape from Jesus Island? It's an independently published horror comic, that is Clive Barker dark, with freakishly scary art. The story hasn't fully developed yet, because there's only been one issue.
I'm just wondering if in your travels you've seen or read it, and your thoughts. If you haven't seen it, I think it would be right up your alley.

Also, I admit that the title sounds like something I would totally pick up. It may even be in my digital archives depending on who released it but I'll have to check. When I return to the states I'll try giving it a lot if I can find it.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for all the awesome work you guys do! I wanted to recommend a older Image title you might be interested in checking out. It's called Tellos, created by Todd Dezago and Mike Wieringo, I think it was published around 2000-2001. It's a 10 issue mini-series with awesome and colorful art, and a plot with a good twist of metafiction and fantasy. It's on Comixology if you want to give it a glance.

You like horror, and from what I understand you also like anime. Have you ever considered reading any kind of manga? I'm not the biggest fan of the genre personally but there is one specific person I follow, Junji Ito. I was put onto him but an artist I follow named Jeff Zornow as one of his inspirations.
I know one of his books, Uzumaki (the spiral), was turned into a movie, but I don't think it did it justice. I would recommend doing a google search for his work on uzumaki and gyo. Both are gruesome but uzumaki is the one that really stands out story-wise.

As soon as I return home from Canada I'm looking for have my friend give my Galaxy tablet an overhaul that will hopefully get me more comfortable with buying comics digitally. For some reason the Galaxy tab doesn't get along very well with Comixology - the pages don't turn properly, the zoom is for shit, and it's just an all around clunky experience. Perhaps he can do something with it that I can't and I'll have the opportunity to check out the comic you suggested. Thanks for the recommend.

Both are gruesome but uzumaki is the one that really stands out story-wise. I do love horror, and I love anime as well. Though as of yet I have not investigated any manga in my exploration of comics. If I'm being completely honest, it would have to be the right one if I were to begin reading them regularly ... if at all. Part of it is due to the sheer amount of manga that exists. I don't know where to start, and anything that I have been interested in has like 18,000 volumes to it, which are all out of my price range given my already ridiculous physical comic book budget. I also find that I enjoy anime on a strictly animated medium. I need that movement to feel the heat of the battle, or that long silence when a character's heart is broken. All of this being said, I plan on breaking into manga sometime this year, but like I said, it has to be the right one. I'll know it when I find it, I suppose. I appreciate your suggestion and will log it away in my notes for the next time I attempt to pick up a book or two.

Hey, Steve! I wanted to ask whether you listen to post-rock type bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, or Mono? When I'm in the mood, I love the atmospheric quality of these groups. I've also been listening to Deafheaven's album Sunbather. Admittedly, I haven't listened to much black metal and many hardcore black metal fans would view me as one of the hipsterish people jumping on the bandwagon, but Sunbather really does blend post-rock with black metal and other genres. Just wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks for being awesome!

Just wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks for being awesome! Yeah man! I've never heard of Mono but I've been listening to Godspeed and Mogwai for a long time. Have you ever seen Godspeed live? The few times that I've seen them they gave some of the LOUDEST and most powerful performances that I've ever witnessed. I once saw them perform at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle on St. Patricks Day. It was bananapants! They reach such intense volumes, and the force of their percussion section is so fierce that you feel as if at any moment that the venue could come crashing down. Though, if you're lucky enough to be leaning against a wall you can enjoy one hell of a hard rock massage. Ha ha! I've heard Sunbather in the past but had found that their music wasn't for me. I appreciate the recommendation though. If you have any more I'd be happy to take a listen. You might dig a band called Crippled Black Phoenix. Check out their album 200 Tons of Bad Luck and let me know what you think. Also, give either Red Sparrows or Isis a shot if you haven't heard them before. Good stuff.
